I had to break up a fight today. These two male monarchs were having a prolonged, intense wrestling match on a meadow blazing star, so I thought I had better intervene. The fighting continued on my hand for a bit. #butterfly #butterflies #nature #photography #SaveTheMonarch

It's been a couple years since I've been to the Wind Point lighthouse. They've added milkweed to their garden. I saw a few monarchs and a mourning cloak taking advantage of it.

Just to clarify my post better, these are the types of posts im talking about. Ones that show these ridiculous view line graphics and little to no have no explanation of uncertainties or how unpredictable space weather can be.
Meteorologists who focus on Earthly weather are not an authority on space weather. Photographers are not an authority on space weather. None of us know for sure what will happen with the limited amount of data we have for space weather.
Space Weather forecasters at NOAA SWPC, NASA, DoD/AFSOC and other official sources are authorities on space weather. If you want information that you can TRUST, consider following these accounts;
- Vincent Ledvina
- Sara Housseal
- Dr. Tamitha Skov
- Space Weather Watch
With that said, many of us will continue to be here long after the viral posts fade, sharing legitimate space weather updates and setting realistic expectations about aurora potential. Reliable forecasting takes more than colorful maps and catchy captions, it requires understanding the data behind them.
While I'm glad many got to get out and experience the Aurora over the past few days, it was pretty disappointing to see several larger accounts posting these wild graphics of where the Auroral view line will be seen and gaining thousands of engagement likes/views and gained thousands of followers from these posts, while the individuals who attempted to share actual sciences and post legitimate information were basically looked over.
I really appreciate individuals like Matthew Cappucci, who take time to add information to their graphics and go into detail into what can be expected and the difficulties forecasting space weather.
Regardless, myself and others' will still be here for a long time to come to share legitimate information about space weather, and won't clickbait you into a forecast that doesn't verify :).

Just to recap what has happened, CME 1 (X1.7) and 2 (X1.2) should hit today, Nov 11. Whether they come as one plasma cloud or CME 1 hits way before CME 2 is up for debate by the models, but we should see *something* tonight.
The first two CMEs may precondition CME 3 (X5.1) to be more geoeffective when it arrives around the evening on Nov 12. At this point, we may already be in a G2-G3 storm, so reaching G4 levels could be possible.
Either way, this newest CME does not change what happened with the first two which are supposed to arrive tonight into tomorrow. This new CME just adds an extra potential for sustained geomagnetic storming and compounding effects.
Keep an eye on space weather data today and tonight. I recommend NOT using ACE EPAM data to track incoming CMEs due to the contamination from the radiation storm which could give false hope. A spike in solar wind Bt is the best way to determine if a shock has arrived. You'll hear it from me if we see that today, so keep following for updates.
