In this day one closing keynote from #RailsWorld 2026, @robbyrussell (@planetargon) talks about the "local workshop" every mature Rails app builds on top of the framework: the patterns, shortcuts, workarounds and oral traditions that teams quietly learn to compensate for, and that AI coding agents are now tripping over.
Drawing on years of experience, Robby agrees that while producing code has gotten cheaper, deciding what belongs, what can be trusted and what should change still takes human judgment.

Looking forward to catching up with old friends, meeting some new ones, and revisiting Austin. It’s been a few years.
I’ll be giving my keynote, “The Most Valuable Engineer Isn’t Shipping Features,” on Tuesday afternoon. I’ve been tinkering with this one for a while… looking forward to finally sharing it.

Packing for Rails World…
More than two months ago, I started writing my keynote by disappearing into the forest near the Oregon coast for a few days. Just me, stacks of notecards, yellow notepads, a lot of trees… and some runs on the beach to let the ideas wander.
I’ve been wondering, unpacking, and tinkering with those ideas since... and am looking forward to finally sharing some of what I’ve been thinking about with everyone in Austin this week.
Also, tacos. I've been thinking a lot about tacos.
