For families, good nutrition is not only about having food available, it is also about knowing how to combine, prepare, and use locally available foods in ways that support healthier diets. In Mafa LGA, Borno State, Plan International Nigeria recently brought this knowledge into practice through hands-on cooking demonstrations for Volunteer Lead Mothers (VLMs) and members of their Mother-to-Mother Support Care Groups in Mafa Central and Tamsu-ngandua communities. Conducted under the Provision of Multi-Sectoral Basic Services for Adolescents and Youth in the Lake Chad Region project, the sessions equipped participants with practical knowledge on preparing nutritious meals using locally available and affordable foods. Mothers explored food combinations, the nutritional value of local ingredients, ways to preserve nutrients during cooking, and healthier dietary choices for their families. By integrating the demonstrations into regular Care Group meetings, the activity also strengthened peer learning, shared experience and community ownership of nutrition practices. When women have the knowledge and confidence to make informed nutrition choices, the benefits reach far beyond a single meal - contributing to healthier children, stronger families and more resilient communities.
