BMW didn’t forget how to build an M3. The world around it changed. Look at the E46 M3 and then look at the G80 M3. Same badge. Completely different idea of what an M3 should be. The E46 was compact, naturally aspirated, relatively simple and mechanical. The S54 had to be worked for, the steering talked to you, and you felt like you were driving the car rather than managing it. Then came the G80.🤯 Turbocharged S58. Massive performance. Huge grip. Technology everywhere. Faster, sharper and vastly more capable than the E46 could ever be. And yet, this is where it gets interesting. The G80 can embarrass the E46 on a road or track. But the E46 has something that numbers can’t really measure. Character. The E46 feels like the M3 was built around the driver. The G80 feels like BMW built the ultimate machine and then gave the driver the keys. Neither is necessarily the better M3. They just represent two very different eras of what BMW thought an M3 should be. And honestly, that’s what makes this comparison so good.
