Great study by @Pitching_Bot, not only looking at defensive fielder positioning, but finding ways to do it better. #SMTDataChallenge #UCSAS2022 1/
Does anyone know where these large spikes of visits to my website came from? (pitchingbot.com not the pitcher grades app)
I assume it was linked to from somewhere but can't find out where.
I'll be at #UCSAS2022 in ten days' time presenting my defensive positioning algorithm which is a finalist for @SMTlive's Data Challenge.
Here's my poster
I've seen it suggested that banning the shift will increase the value of infielder range. I used my defensive models to see if that's the case.
There isn't much of an overall effect, but there are significant changes with individual positions and batter handedness.
How do I define range? A shift in the probability of reaching a ball using the curves below.
E.g. +1 range reaches 50/50 balls at around a 75% rate
My infield model isn't very certain on fielding probability so one "unit" of range corresponds to a large ability shift.
