Messi got an ovation from a packed theater in Spain on Friday, with the King and Queen in the room, and he gave it about 30 seconds with his eyes on the floor, fiddling with his jacket button.
Then you see who else was on that stage.
One of them was Christina Koch. She flew around the Moon back in April, the first woman ever to do it.
Three more were the scientists who made reading DNA cheap. Two Cambridge chemists, David Klenerman and Shankar Balasubramanian, plus a French biophysicist named Pascal Mayer. Their work took the cost of reading one full human genome from over a billion dollars and about a decade down to roughly a thousand bucks and a single day. The company the two chemists started became Illumina, and most DNA sequencing on the planet still runs on their method.
Studio Ghibli was up there too, the studio behind Spirited Away, along with Patti Smith and the novelist Julian Barnes.
Messi was the most famous person in that building by a mile. Spanish reporters in the room said it looked like he didn't want to pull any of the spotlight off everyone else, so he let the applause go and got out of the way.
The award is the Princess of Asturias, which people in Spain call the Spanish Nobel. The same foundation honored Nelson Mandela back in 1992.
Football has had a weird history with this prize. Brazil's national team won it in 2002, Spain's won in 2010, and Casillas and Xavi shared it in 2012. In 2009 the jury had a Barcelona team that had just won the treble with a 22-year-old Messi, and they voted it out before the final round. A Russian pole vaulter ended up winning.
Seventeen years later, he's the first footballer to ever win it by himself.
Princess Leonor handed it to him and told the room she wasn't sure anything else on earth could make the whole world feel the same thing at the same moment.
He didn't give a speech. A guy with eight Ballon d'Ors was standing next to the people who made the genome cheap to read and a woman who'd just been to the Moon, and he treated his own ovation like he was holding up the line.

Dodging Russian Drones On Ukrainian Road To Frontline Druzhkivka
RFE/RL's @radiosvoboda joins Ukraine’s 93rd Mechanized Brigade on a dangerous route to Druzhkivka where Russian drones target vehicles and troops. Only a few thousand civilians remain inside the battered frontline city as Russian bombs devastate homes and Ukrainian forces hold the line. ⬇️

Based on what I see on this app. Nigerian dating culture is just prostitution. Boy meets girl. Boy says you’re cute I would like to take you out. Girl sends money request. Boy pays or says no because she’s too expensive. Girls there have no values or morals they are driven by 💰

“I don’t know if there is another phenomenon capable of generating such a universal feeling.
He turned the extraordinary into routine… while respecting the collective essence above the ego.”

Drone footage shows the soldier falling after being hit by the drone. His wounded comrade then appears to gesture for him to end his suffering before the soldier fires a fatal shot.
An investigation by RFE/RL’s Systema and Current Time identified the men as Russian servicemen and concluded the footage was genuine. The incident occurred near Robotyne, in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, in 2024

People don’t even understand this Princess award, they think its a normal award.
They are even joking with it.
This is an award that Nelson Mandela has won o.
Its not just a sports award. It recognizes outstanding performances across many fields including, Science, Literature, and arts.
That’s why you’re seeing Kings and Queens and prime ministers present at the award.
Do you see ishowspeed there?
No, because its not a football award where anyone can come.
Messi is him abeg🐐
Messi, btw, what a guy. With all the jabs Ronaldo and his family have thrown directly at him, I genuinely can’t think of a single time he has responded to any of them. He was able to express how he felt about Lewandowski’s comments after winning the Ballon d’Or, Lewandowski apologized, and they moved on. But Ronaldo? Messi doesn’t even seem to think he’s worth his time or energy. The level of unbothered this man operates on needs to be studied😭

“My father was extremely excited about this award”.
“We knew it would be difficult because of my match schedule, but he really insisted that we come, that I travel here to spend these days and receive the award”.
“This award goes beyond what you do on the pitch or what I've achieved throughout my career”.
“Honestly, he was very happy about this recognition and that's why I'm sure he's enjoying it too”.

🇦🇷🇪🇸 MESSI MAKES HISTORY AGAIN
He has become the FIRST footballer ever to receive Spain's prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Sports individually.
World Cup champion, eight Ballon d'Or awards, countless records, and now another historic distinction to add to an already ridiculous collection.

💎 FPL GW8 Captaincy Thoughts:
Aston Villa have beaten City in the last three meetings at Villa Park.
This is Emery’s specialist game if there was one.
442/424 deep block, with such small spaces between the lines, and very little for Haaland in behind.
Very, very well coached press & OOP structure at all phases.
Losing Semenyo’s threat, and it essentially being replaced by Ndiaye who’s service into Haaland and ability to generate returns for him is far worse, does not help.
You can go into detail, but he’s just not as good, and it hurts Haaland.
Villa are having their typical early-mid stage resurgence, albeit on a smaller scale as the start of the season was only bad for a little bit.
They can definitely land big blows to City’s ever susceptible defence, especially with the devastating (it can truly be devastating!) effect of the Jackson & Manzambi 1-2 punch.
If Cherki is in the XI, which it looks like he is, then City almost definitely concede some big chances here. That swings momentum, and a series of events not congruent with Haaland having chances can unfold from there.
It’s the early kick off as well, which is not good. That place will be up for it.
-
It’s Haaland, he can score a hat-trick against anyone, but that’s not the point here.
I think it’s a pretty good spot to take.
-
Who do you captain then?
Joao Pedro
Cole Palmer
Morgan Rogers (need a certain level of risk appetite, albeit a good matchup)
Morgan Gibbs-White
-
Kinsky’s error prone nature, especially in a game like this is, could well come to the forefront.
Spurs’ in general are a pretty error prone side. You can be a quality player, even a world class player, and still have some disasters up your sleeve (Allison, Upamecano) come to mind.
Van Hecke, van de Ven, Robertson, Gray (at RB), Tonali - They’re all capable of it more than you’d like.
Lastly De Zerbi’s style & the quality of the Chelsea attack means 2+ goals is quite/very likely.
You’re walking in with a high floor.
-
Joao Pedro is almost certain to have 1/2 big opportunities to return at a minimum.
He’s currently my preference.
Palmer the most explosive but not as reliable. Good game to get a penalty though.
-
MGW could find himself in a blow for blow type of game, and I wouldn’t be surprised if that saw him net two returns.
Ipswich don’t care, they will attack you.
Respect the courage.
-
Good luck
