I see @indiawilloughby is *still* lying in his bio about being "UK Woman of the Year 2023". He wasn't. To set the record straight -
"India Willoughby was nominated (one of several hundred attendees), not the overall or sole “UK Woman of the Year 2023” winner.(thelondoneconomic.com/news/i…)
Key facts
- Contemporary reporting from outlets including *The London Economic*, *The Herald*, and others, plus Willoughby’s own writing at the time, consistently described it as a "nomination". Willoughby was nominated by a panel for campaign work and attended the Women of the Year Lunch and Awards on 16 October 2023 at the Royal Lancaster in London, along with more than 400 other [actual] women (thelondoneconomic.com/news/i…)
- The organisation (Women of the Year) invites a large group of nominees each year. Its site states that each guest “is nominated by a member of the Women of the Year Nominating Council... attending the gathering as a ‘Woman of the Year’.” Specific awards (e.g. Lifetime Achievement, Campaign of the Year) are then given to a small number of people. The 2023 specific award winners included Baroness Hale, Merope Mills, Lisa Woodcock, and others—Willoughby was not among them.(womenoftheyear.co.uk/awards/…)
- Willoughby’s current X/Twitter bio lists “UK Woman Of Year 2023.” This appears to be a shorthand or self-description of the nomination/invitation status that the event uses for its large group of attendees, rather than a claim of having won a singular top prize.
In short: nominated and invited as one of the many “Women of the Year” guests for the 2023 event, not awarded as the winner of the title in the sense of a sole or overall recipient."

Next Thursday the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal begins again, launching across the country on 22nd October, with London Poppy Day following a week later on the 29th.
It has always mattered to me because of the people in my own family who served. Great-grandfathers and uncles went to the First World War; all four of my grandparents served in the Second. My grandmother was in the WAAF, one grandfather was in the Royal Navy, and the other was a Warrant Officer and air gunner in the RAF. They survived and came home. Vast numbers of others never did...... and that remains true in the conflicts that have come since.
The men and women who serve, whether then, now or in the future, are owed far more than a poppy.
Even so, wearing one is still one of the simplest public ways we have of showing respect and of thanking them for their courage, and of acknowledging the families who carry the weight of that service with them.
