Four years ago we set out to reconnect Labour with working people of Britain: it was hard; it involved re-prioritising; plans changed... because progressive politics is a dialogue with the people... and the results are in: 1️⃣ Plymouth MV (the north bit) has more armed forces veterans than any other constituency. Look what Labour achieved ... 2️⃣ Avon. And Somerset. Now have a Labour PPC... 3️⃣ Blackpool South, which looked impossible for Labour ever to retake, won by a great, local candidate... But here's three things I am worried about... ⭕️ Outer London: the anti-Sadiq/anti-ULEZ mobilisation provides a model for right wing populism's attack on any politician who takes Net Zero seriously ⭕️ Apathy and atomisation is the highest I've ever seen it on the poorest areas including big cities and suburban towns ⭕️ The Green surge against Labour is going to grow in university cities, and will break thru into Parliament unless Labour shows it can deliver on climate. Sunak should now call an election. Every time he appeals to racism, Reform grows. This will get worse if Farage takes over Reform UK ... I know there are few liberal Tories left, but even the illiberal ones surely don't want to go down in history as the generation who handed the baton of conservatism to a bunch of Russian proxies and flat earthers? With every Labour electoral advance it's easy to forget the disaster of 2019, and what caused it, and the dire strategists who led us there despite being warned, and who now sit on the sidelines fawning over Galloway. Last night is what successful social-democratic politics looks like. Let's see just how successful as the results come in...
