We think about grain quality with corn, but don’t forget soybeans. Purple seed stain and Diaporthe seed decay are two diseases that are been showing up.

Delayed soybean harvest during a wet fall can increase risk of seed issues. These images are from a field in central Iowa on September 24, 2026. #soybean #harvest26

Random dead plants in your field??
Most the dead (some call ghost) plants that are right next to green ones have prematurely died from crown rot.
I have always found it intriguing that one plant can die weeks too soon & the plant right next to it is perfectly fine & appears unaffected. This is a result from our saturated soils earlier in the growing season.
Good drainage, no compaction, genetics, solid fertility & not over applying N all help.

In case you missed it…
Last night, American Family Field was led by 102-year-old World War II veteran Sverre Vinje in God Bless America on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
Incredible moment in Milwaukee.

The corn crop is made in July...
I have never agreed with this statement. For us in NE IA corn is typically at blister stage at the end of July. While pollination is incredibly important, majority of grain fill takes place in August. Approximately 70-80% of grain yield is put on in August, with the last 3-4 weeks being extremely important for achieving high yields with the kernel flex of today's genetics.
Moisture, sunshine and nutrient availability is extremely important in August. This is why looking for nutrient deficiency symptoms during grain fill can be incredibly valuable for maximizing returns on future crops.
Grain yield is completed.... be sure to spend some time in your fields to listen to what your crop is telling you!

Updated Corteva Disease Tracker
Our "common" diseases such as Tar Spot, NCLB & GLS are picking up in risk and now able to find a bit easier in the fields.
Also keep in mind fungicides provide benefits outside of disease protection such as drought/heat stress mitigation as well as improved late season standability.
Visit with your local Pioneer Sales Rep on fungicide decisions if you have not already.

Jamie Pollard’s Iowa State tenure by the numbers (all were compiled in the final chapter of my book):
Media/licensing: $7.88M in 2005 → $43.68M in 2024
Athletics budget: $28.2M in 2005 → $141.1M approved for 2026
Ticket revenue: $9.12M in 2005 → $23.37M in 2024
Football season tickets: 22,000 → 45,000
Athletics employees: 50 → 250
That growth also showed up physically, with major facility upgrades across campus, including the long-discussed transformation of Jack Trice Stadium’s south end zone.
No athletics director does that alone. Conference revenue, coaches, donors, alumni growth and fan support all matter.
But leadership and stability matter, too.
By any fair measure, Pollard’s tenure was the most consequential in Iowa State athletics history.

Jefferson becomes Iowa State's first NBA Draft pick since Tyrese Haliburton in 2020.
The former Iowa State star forward was selected No. 28 overall in the 2026 #NBADraft by the Minnesota Timberwolves and is headed to Brooklyn via trade.

Updated maps from yesterday's model run shows NE IA in very low risk for all diseases at this time.
Some have been concerned about tar spot as some possible reports in central IA.. The heat that is coming next week will keep Tar Spot in check!!
