Not so long ago (okay, 23 years ago… 👴🏻), my dear friend @PierreVincent and I would build websites entirely offline, transfer the files to floppy disks (several of them, for redundancy), and… ride our bloody bikes 🚴🏻‍♂️ to the library to upload updates to free FTP servers!

Tools so fast and easy to use that they unleash creativity and collaboration in ways that weren't possible before. My take: relentlessly invest in speeding up your design & front-end development processes, and you'll take your products to whole new level.

I'm trying to optimise my time and energy in work by asking: 1. Can I ignore this? 2. Can I delegate this? 3. Can I defer this? 4. If I have to do this can I: - Decompose this? 5. If I have to do this more than once can I: - Can I simplify this? - Can I automate this?

Internet Explorer was Shit not despite the divorces it caused on the engineering team -- but because of them. Building great products requires creativity and creativity is stifled by consistently over-working engineers. It’s an insight many still don't get 🧵

“Crimes” in exclamation marks here, refers to British soldiers shooting 26 and killing 14 human beings who were marching for their civil rights in 1972

These nation-state attackers used Kubernetes for distributed, scalable brute forcing. My ongoing hot take is relevant here: attackers have more in common with devs and operators than defenders / traditional infosec pros. Think in systems or stay stuck in Plato’s cave ✨💁

QA is wonderful. Shouldn't be a blocker. The test community seems to be coming around and enthusiastically endorsing this idea. As they should! Staging is a deadpool where too many people waste too much time fishing for bugs that won't emerge until production.

Isn't it mad that the Irish government have to commemorate bloody sunday in this polite way so as not to offend themselves or the British government? Just call it what it was. Tax-funded British terrorism. Soldiers murdering a crowd of people enjoying a match.

A question we get frequently from engineering leaders is: "How can I tell that we're improving or making progress on learning from incidents?" For the most part, folks understand that decreasing frequency of incidents, or the duration of them, isn't evidence the org is learning.

For years I mistook confidence for competence and thought I was the problem and I was missing obvious things. Only after I started asking "how" and "why" (and not let go until I get a good answer!) did I realise how often people bullshits their way through eng decisions... 🤦‍♂️

YES. ✨Engineers who are productive are happy.✨ Productivity is a trailing indicator that a LOT of things are working well. The liberty to focus your attention on the most important problem and build or fix that thing is a stunning achievement.
Replying to @mipsytipsy
There seems to have been a movement that said that Engineering Happiness leads to productivity. In my >25 years of industry exposure, the overwhelming evidence is the opposite. Engineers who are productive are Happy. Tooling that allows that, (esp in times of stress) FTW

Anger and aggression sometimes seem to be protective because they bring energy to bear on a particular situation, but that energy is blind. It takes a calm mind to be able to consider things from different angles and points of view.
