Business rant for the day… 😤
Signing a contract means something. 📝🤝
If you agree to the terms and then plead ignorance later, perhaps you shouldn’t be running a business. What do you think? 💭
I can’t tell you how often I have to deal with this scenario. 🙄

🇿🇦 Our South Africa is making progress on green technology, with several pilot projects underway. It’s true! We can be proud.
But …
I believe it is important to scrutinise these initiatives carefully and distinguish real progress from greenwashing. 🌱🔍
One project worth watching is the national green hydrogen programme, which recently reached a milestone at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town. 🇿🇦 (again, my invite must have been lost in the post) Anyway..
Our Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa unveiled the country’s first wave of six priority green hydrogen and Power-to-X projects. Among them is a partnership between Enertrag and ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA), aimed at reviving and reindustrialising the mothballed Saldanha Steel Works. 🏭⚡
The project plans to use green hydrogen in the plant’s existing Midrex facility to turn iron ore into direct-reduced iron (DRI) without fossil fuels. That DRI could then be used to produce lower-carbon steel, potentially strengthening South Africa’s role in the global market for greener industrial materials. 🔩🌍
Every step counts.
Projects like this could help cut emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as heavy industry, aviation and shipping. Replacing fossil fuels with green hydrogen may offer significant climate benefits, but the details and real-world outcomes matter. 🌿📉

🛒💳 I love watching the big grocery and retail players compete—and Shoprite’s latest move is making waves in the fintech space.Shoprite’s quiet multi-bank offensive—say what? 👀
Beyond its retail dominance, Shoprite is building a digital banking and rewards ecosystem. Its Money Market Account has evolved from a basic digital wallet into a transactional account, bringing more financial services right to the till. The strategy could put Shoprite in the ring with established banks like Capitec, Absa and FNB—while aiming to reach lower- and middle-income customers. 🏦

🚨 Lost beneath the flashy headlines about corporate ransomware, Kaspersky telemetry reveals a fascinating fact: very basic network backdoor e-attacks are surging by 123%. 📈
Instead of loud, immediate extortion, hackers are focusing on maintaining long-term access to critical infrastructure. 🕵️♂️🔐

What a fascinating organization! I love collaboration, and this has to be one of the best examples I've found in a while. 🤝✨The Global Initiative is a ‘friendly’, independent organization based in Geneva, Switzerland, with team members all around the world and a top-notch advisory board. 🌍
Their network includes passionate experts in law enforcement, governance, and development, all eager to find fresh, innovative ways to tackle organized crime. 🚔🌟
The Initiative began in good old New York during some high-level, off-the-record chats in 2011–12. Officials from both developed and developing countries realized that the issues and impacts of organized crime needed better analysis and integration into national plans. They saw that current global tools weren't quite up to the task, and cooperation was often slow and limited.
From that, we got the Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime. It's a platform fostering discussion and innovation, acting as the foundation for a more inclusive and effective global strategy against organized crime. 🌐
💬 Take a look at their site, you might find some value!

📵 Hate those spam calls?
Here’s some digital marketing news you’re going to love! 🎉
Our Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau (someone who I should write an entire article about), has launched the National Opt-Out Registry—and not a moment too soon, considering South Africans received 17.47 billion spam calls in the first half of 2026 alone! 📞
Under the new regulation, telemarketers, banks and retailers must register and check their contact lists against the central database every month.
Non-compliant organisations may face serious penalties, including administrative fines of up to R1 million or 10% of their annual turnover. ⚖️
The registry is being implemented in phases, with direct marketer registration continuing through late 2026, followed by list cleansing and a full compliance deadline in early 2027—which is just around the corner! ⏳
To report a company for violating the National Opt-Out Registry, lodge a formal consumer complaint with the National Consumer Commission (NCC): thencc.org.za/complaints/

I've been trying to get to this post for days now. 🗓️
A record-breaking 962832 South African learners (candidates) are registered to write the South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) matric exams this year. That’s so exciting! 🎉 I want to wish each and every one of them all the very best! 🍀✨
BUT ALSO… share these important comments:
If you learned two things from school, I really hope it was curiosity about life, nature, tech, and business, and also enjoyment of learning.
As we approach the future, know that many of your future careers and jobs have not even been invented yet.
🔮 Re-learning is the way of the future.
Multiple careers or avenues for revenue are the future. Running one's own company or side hustle is the future. 🚀💼
I got awful matric marks... I mean so bad my mom hid the report in a box so far away I only found it 20 years later! 😂📦 Always give yourself a chance to succeed – champion your success. I did🌟💪

🔐 Time for some Cybersecurity News 🌍
According to INTERPOL’s African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026, AI now facilitates 55% of all reported cybercrimes across Africa.
With our continental digital transactions surpassing $1.1 trillion, AI is being weaponized more and more to automated social engineering, credential harvesting, and large-scale financial scams, contributing to around $484 million in annual losses. 🚨💸 – that is a lot of moola!
📄 You can get a copy of the report here if you like and remember, if you need help with cyber security, you can reach out to me.

Here is an interesting nugget I have just learnt. 🧠💡
On the 10th of October was World Mental Health Day – wait now, that’s not the lesson. The lesson is that the World Health Organization (WHO) launched a global directive urging countries to dismantle long-term institutionalized psychiatric hospital models! 🌍🏥
Why? 🤔
Because nearly half of patients in large psychiatric facilities globally are held involuntarily! I had no idea! How scary is that fact? 😟
There are people in my life who suffer from mental health issues – so this really does hit home. 💚
The alternative option that WHO is encouraging is a transition to community-based, person-centered care. 🤝✨

Some global economic news I just learnt. 🌍📉
The UN trade body (UNCTAD: unctad.org/) latest report is predicting that global economic growth will likely slow to 2.6%, down from 2.9% last year…. And we know very well some of the reasons for that! 🧐💡

Airtel Africa (airtel.africa/) has announced a huge infrastructure expansion to support 183.5 million customers across 14 markets here in Africa.
The company has increased its capital expenditure, investing $884 million to roll out more than 3250 new network sites and expand its terrestrial fibre network by approximately 3200 kilometres. 🌍📶
This is another reminder that telecommunications is one of the fastest-growing industries on the continent. 🚀

Some great environmental news! 🌊
🐢 Green sea turtles' numbers are improving! 🌱✨ Yaaas!
In a #greenflag story for marine conservation, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) officially downlisted the green sea turtle from Endangered to Least Concern.
Their global population has rebounded by approximately 28% since the 1970s, with total monitored nesting activity climbing from around 419000 nests in 2011 to roughly 526000.
I really hope to sea one of these 😉 – pun intended 🌏💙

Lets start this week with an update on legal matters related to big corporates, government and Mother Nature 🌍. This is important stuff…
Let’s start in the USA 🇺🇸, and the Supreme Court weighing the future of climate liability lawsuits 🌱⚖️. Not long ago, on the 5th of October 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments on Suncor Energy Inc. v. County Commissioners of Boulder County, a case with potential consequences for nearly 60 climate-related lawsuits brought by state and local governments across the country. It’s a big thing and we should keep an eye on it 👀.
The issue at hand is whether cities and counties can use state tort law (the branch of law that deals with civil wrongs that cause someone else to suffer harm or loss, resulting in legal liability for the person who committed the act) to seek damages from fossil fuel companies for climate-related harms 🛢️🔥. In 2026, I think this is an especially valid consideration.
There are countries around the world that already use tort law to fight global crimes 🌎⚖️. While major international atrocities like war crimes, human rights abuses, and piracy are typically prosecuted through criminal law, a powerful legal parallel exists where victims use local civil courts to hit perpetrators and corporations financially 💰. When applied to global evils, this is known as ‘civil-side universal jurisdiction’ or transnational human rights litigation. (“Transnational human rights litigation” – just saying that makes the hairs on my arm stand up.)
Several landmark cases have successfully utilized domestic civil tort law to hold corporations and even individuals financially accountable for severe global crimes like torture, forced labour, war crimes, and environmental destruction 🌿⚔️. A prominent example I can share is the Netherlands, Royal Dutch Shell & The Ogoni Devastation (January 2021) 🐚⛽️. Following a very gruelling 13-year legal battle led by Friends of the Earth (foei.org/), the Dutch Court of Appeal in The Hague ruled that Royal Dutch Shell was civilly liable for environmental devastation and widespread human rights impacts in the Niger Delta. There have been several historic tort and civil lawsuits here in Africa 🇿🇦. Nigeria, The Shell Ogoniland Settlements (2009 & 2015) and South Africa, The Cape PLC Asbestos Verdict (2001) are just two examples I can name drop, there are more ⚖️.
Based on these facts, I would assume it’s easy to apply a precedent for the case underway for the Suncor Energy Inc. v. County Commissioners of Boulder County case 📚. It would for me be a slam dunk matter. The ‘companies’ are arguing that local governments cannot use ‘these’ laws to regulate global emissions or corporate conduct worldwide and say that the Clean Air Act places climate policy and greenhouse gas regulation under federal authority 🌍🏛️. Jurisdiction is such a fascinating ‘thing’.
The lawsuits underway include actions brought by jurisdictions such as Honolulu, Hawaii, and Middlesex County, New Jersey 🌺🦩. Local governments say they should be able to pursue claims over harms they attribute to climate chang and a ruling in their favour could leave energy companies facing potentially billions of dollars in damages 💸.
It’s a positive trend 📈. There really is a positive trend underway, with climate-related liability lawsuits against major corporations surging. Globally over 3600 climate-related cases have been filed across 62 countries 🌍⚖️ and South Africa has become a major global hotspot for climate litigation with our efforts focused on blocking fossil fuel projects before they start or stopping government fossil fuel policies using our country's progressive Bill of Rights. This is something I think we should all feel a sense of pride for – I certainly do 🌿✊. Let me share some examples of cases you might not know about.
The first is the Shell Wild Coast Constitutional Court Victory (August 2026) 🏆. In a final ruling on 14 August 2026 (so not long ago), South Africa’s apex court permanently stripped Shell and Impact Africa of their rights to conduct 3D seismic surveys for oil and gas off the ecologically sensitive Eastern Cape Wild Coast 🌊. The judges explicitly ruled that the government had unlawfully granted exploration rights because it completely failed to evaluate the long-term climate change impacts 🌱.
The next I want to share is the #CancelCoal Appeal (also August this year) 🌱. This case is a battle between environmental groups, led by the African Climate Alliance (ACA), groundWork, and the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER), and our national government. In late 2024, the Pretoria High Court ruled in favour of the youth-led activists ✊, striking down the government's plans to build 1500 megawatts of new coal-fired power plants because decision-makers failed to assess how the emissions would harm children’s constitutional rights and public health ⚖️. In August this year, the Minister of Electricity and Energy appealed this landmark ruling using more of our taxpayers’ money 💰. The appeal was officially heard by South Africa's Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) on 19 August 2026. The outcome of this appeal will establish exactly how heavily the government must weigh future generational climate harms before building any fossil-fuel infrastructure ⚡. How it is not law that decisions under consideration by our government do not automatically include a ‘future thinking scenario plan’ boggles my mind – it seems the obvious imperative to me 🤔.
Then finally, but the examples are by no means exhausted: Just Share v. Thungela Resources (2025 to Present). Moving directly into corporate boardrooms, public interest groups like Just Share and Fossil Free South Africa launched an ongoing High Court bid against coal miner Thungela Resources 🏢. This case tests the South African Companies Act to establish whether shareholders have an absolute right to force corporate boards to put climate change and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) resolutions up for a vote 📊. These types of ‘cases’ are the very ones I want to be involved with, and the reason I am pursuing studies in law to become a legal whizz in environmental law 👩⚖️📚.
Listen carefully now, you don’t need to be an attorney to take action when a company or government body is causing, allowing, or failing to prevent environmental harm 💪🌍. The route to pursue depends on the facts, the harm, and what outcome you want. Some options to ponder:
Option 1: Report the matter to the relevant authority 📞. Depending on the issue, this could be the national Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment; a provincial environmental department; a municipality; or a regulator such as the Department of Water and Sanitation 💧. If you do, keep records and ask for a reference, you might need them later when you take further action using one of my two final options shared in this article.
Option 2: Use an administrative appeal or objection ✉️. Environmental authorisations, licences, and certain official decisions may be challenged through an internal appeal process 📜. Deadlines can be short, so check the decision notice and applicable legislation.
Option 3: Bring a court application ⚖️. A person or organisation with a sufficient interest may seek a review of an unlawful government decision, an order requiring an authority to perform a legal duty, or an interdict to stop or prevent harm 🤝. Claims against companies may seek compliance with environmental duties, prevention of pollution, or, where legally available, compensation 💵.
Option 4: Use environmental public-interest litigation 🌳⚖️. Section 38 of our wonderful Constitution allows people and organisations to approach a court in the public interest or on behalf of affected people 🤲. Section 24 recognises the right to an environment that is not harmful to health or well-being and requires reasonable environmental protection measures 🌱.
Option 5: Consider criminal or specialist enforcement 🚔. Some environmental breaches are offences. Report suspected offences to the relevant regulator or the police 👮; environmental authorities may investigate and, where appropriate, refer matters for prosecution ⚖️. And I left my favourite two for the end:
Option 6: The Public Protector 🛡️. You can complain if a government department, municipality, or other public body has acted improperly, for example, by failing to investigate a pollution complaint, ignoring a legal duty, or handling an environmental decision unfairly 💬. The Public Protector investigates maladministration and improper conduct by public authorities; it generally does not investigate private companies directly or replace a court appeal 🏛️. Use email: [email protected]
Option 7: The Green Scorpions 🦂. This is the ‘common name’ for environmental compliance and enforcement officials, including officials in national and provincial environmental departments. They can investigate suspected breaches of environmental laws and authorisations by companies or individuals, and may take enforcement steps or refer suspected offences for prosecution
⚖️. Report the incident to the environmental department responsible for the area, providing the location, dates, evidence, and any known permit or company details 💼. Ask for a case or reference number 📞. Use emails: [email protected] or [email protected]
