🎙️⚽️ Recently jumped on the Modern Soccer Coach podcast with Gary to talk about how we create learning environments for players.
We got into how much our practice design can shape the way players perceive and solve problems.
Really enjoyed this one.

Some players thrive with less space and less time.
Yet much of coach education is built around the idea that maximum space and time is the greatest advantage.
Are we developing our players to be the best version of themselves, or conditioning players to fit the game model?
In Maresca's Positionism, player freedom is maximised by receiving the ball with a certain amount of 'space and time' before pressure arrives.
However, many players express their best qualities when receiving the ball close to opponents and teammates.

“Rather than teaching isolated techniques…” followed by 20 minutes of isolated technical practice.
Technique is important, but where does it come from?
Skill emerges from the need to solve a functional problem; techniques emerge as part of those solutions.

We can still create isolated practice within an ecological approach.
Set the task. Manipulate the environment. Add individual constraints.
The aim of technical training should be to expand the ways a player can solve a task, not perfect one solution.
One of my biggest concerns with how the ecological approach is sometimes interpreted in football is the lack of emphasis placed on technical ability and technical actions.
We rightly talk about perception, decision-making, adaptability and solving problems.
But ultimately, the solution still has to be executed.
Speak to players operating at the highest level and they’ll tell you how important technical quality is — first touch, manipulation, ball striking, receiving under pressure, 1v1 ability.
Decision-making and technique aren’t competing with each other.
Your decisions are only as good as your ability to execute them.
For me, that technical quality remains fundamental to developing game-changing players.

Football intelligence begins with attunement. Skilled players don’t just execute actions; they perceive the affordances the environment offers. When that attunement is missing, decisions become disconnected from the game.

“Right passes. Right speed. Right positions.”
What a linear view of football. The best players manipulate rhythm and invent solutions. Prescribing positions and pass types limits the opportunity for deception. England should be much harder to predict with the quality we produce.

Great dribblers don’t just dribble because the pass isn’t on. They dribble because they perceive it as an advantage.
Passing doesn’t necessarily come first, nor is it inherently superior to dribbling. They are simply different solutions to the same problem.
🚨🗣️ Xabi Alonso:
“The best dribblers don’t beat players for applause. They do it because the pass wasn’t there.” #CFC

Tactics are an integral part of player development.
What Capello is describing is the imposing of game models.
Dynamic problems for players to solve are tactical and essential. The aim isn’t to teach predetermined solutions, but to improve players’ attunement to the game.
