Why PiPhi continues to prioritize local APIs and open device control. The smart-home industry is increasingly moving toward closed ecosystems, subscriptions, and paid access to functionality that developers and users once had more freely. Samsung recently announced that beginning in October 2026, non-commercial developers using the SmartThings API will require a paid plan, with commercial tiers also being introduced. For us, this reinforces why PiPhi continues to look for devices and manufacturers that support local APIs, local communication, and greater freedom over how your own hardware and data are used. If you purchase a device, we believe you should have meaningful control over it. Your automations shouldn’t stop working because a cloud service changes its pricing. Your integrations shouldn’t disappear because an API becomes restricted. And your data shouldn’t have to leave your network simply because you want two devices to communicate. This is also why we are investing heavily in the PiPhi plugin ecosystem. No development team can realistically build and maintain every integration themselves. By providing developers with documented tools to extend PiPhi, we can create an ecosystem where new hardware and new ideas can be supported without waiting for a single company to decide what users are allowed to connect. Local where possible. Extensible by design. Your devices. Your data. Your control. That is the direction we believe smart technology should be heading. #PiPhiNetworks #SmartHome #HomeAutomation #IoT #LocalFirst #OpenAPI #Matter #Zigbee

Smart Homes Are Getting More Connected. Troubleshooting Them Shouldn’t Be Getting Harder. On June 17, 2026, the Thread Group introduced Thread Tools, a diagnostic application designed to provide better visibility into real-world Thread networks. One of the reasons behind the tool is something the smart-home industry continues to struggle with: when a connected environment becomes more complex, figuring out why something stopped working can become just as difficult as building the automation in the first place. That problem is something we’ve been thinking about closely while developing PiPhi. Our goal isn’t simply to give users another way to create automations. We want users to actually understand what their automations are doing. That’s where the PiPhi Automation Testing Bay comes in. Instead of deploying an automation and hoping everything behaves as expected, the testing environment is being designed to help answer questions such as: What triggered the automation? Which conditions were met? What device responded? Where did the workflow stop or fail? What could be changed or improved? As smart homes continue expanding across Zigbee, Thread, Matter, Wi-Fi and manufacturer-specific ecosystems, visibility into what is happening behind the scenes is becoming increasingly important. Connectivity is only part of the equation. Understanding how your connected environment behaves is the next step. That is a major part of what we’re building with @PiPhi_Network Networks. PiPhi Software Development Update For the sake of transparency, we wanted to share another update on the current status of the PiPhi software and where development is heading. We’ve come a long way in a relatively short period of time, especially considering the size of the team. More importantly, we now have a much clearer understanding of what we want the software to become, how users should interact with it, and what functionality needs to exist at the core of the platform. A significant amount of work has gone into improving the front end and introducing quality-of-life improvements throughout the application. Some of the larger additions currently being developed and tested include: Behavioral Automation Platform: A guided, step-by-step automation builder that allows users to create automations based on the behavior, state, or activity of sensors and devices connected to their system. Advanced Automation & Workflow Builder: For users who want greater control, the advanced builder provides additional flexibility for creating more complex device workflows. Automation Testing Bay: Automations can be tested before deployment, allowing users to identify where a workflow may fail, understand how devices will respond, and make improvements before putting it into production. Desktop & Mobile Automation Control: Automations can be triggered through the desktop application and will also be available through the PiPhi mobile application. The mobile application remains under active development, but this functionality has already been successfully tested. Expanded Plugin Development: We’ve continued improving the tools available for developers to create new plugins and extend the capabilities of the PiPhi platform. Expanded Device Support: We’ve significantly increased the number of supported devices and integrations, including continued work around @Zigbee devices and new integrations such as the Tesla charging dashboard. A major part of this development process has been learning what works, what doesn’t, and what needs to change before we consider the platform ready for wider use. We would rather take the time to build the underlying systems properly than rush features simply for the sake of releasing them. There is still work ahead of us, but the foundation of the platform is becoming considerably stronger, and many of the concepts we originally envisioned are now becoming functional parts of the software. We appreciate everyone who continues to follow the project, provide feedback, test features, and support what we’re building. More updates to come as development continues. — The PiPhi Team
