It is with heavy hearts that we hear of the passing of the great Professor Peter Higgs. The @CambridgeHEP group and all at the Cavendish extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

ALT Peter Higgs writting formulas on a transparent board next to a quote that reads: It is with heavy hearts that we hear of the passing of the great Professor Peter Higgs. His work on the origin of mass is the keystone of our standard model of particles and forces. Understanding the particle he first predicted in 1964 will be the great mission of particle physics well into the latter half of this century. The Cambridge High Energy Physics group and all at the Cavendish would like to offer our deepest sympathies to his family and friends.”

It’s been a great night that our branch @IOPEast held the 3 Minute Wonder (3MW) competition tonight at the @DeptofPhysics. Congrats to Dr Jonathan Bar David the winner and Ana R. Hernandez Rodriguez the runner-up. Many thanks go to the committee members (iop.org/physics-community/io…).
Unfortunately our speaker for tonight, Dr Sam Rigby, has been unable to get out of Sheffield. The Cambridge Physics Center lecture will go ahead as planned, but he will be joining us remotely.
Unfortunately Janaan Hussein is unable to give her CPC talk on 18th January, but Dr Lisa Jardine-Wright, OBE has kindly stepped in to take her place with a talk on the A-Z of Diffraction: Discovering the Structure of DNA.

Replying to @LouiseShanahan
@LouiseShanahan reminds us it's okay not to have it all figured out in school. Louise realised at university that she had to do physics in order to pursue her research interest in Biomedical physics later.

The third of this year's CPC lectures in taking place next Thursday, come along to the Cavendish to hear Margaret Reynolds talk about the physics behind passive house design.
