Dispensationalism has always been, and remains, a hotbed of heresy. In 1967, Oxford edited its "Scofield" Bible to erase some points of abject heresy left from the first two editions, due to popular demand. The original is pretty jaw-dropping for someone vaguely familiar with Christianity. The original Scofield note on 1 John 3:7 read, “The righteous man under the law became righteous by doing righteously; under grace he does righteously because he has been made righteous.” In 1 John 1:17, it reads, "The point of testing is no longer legal obedience as the condition of salvation, but acceptance or rejection of Christ.” The controversy, if you're unaware, is that no one has ever been justified by good works or keeping God's Law. The Bible is exceptionally clear on this point. The Law, which promised life, only brought death because of man's incapacity to follow it. Instead, the Patriarch and the other Old Testament saints were saved like everyone else - justified by faith - trusting in Jesus who was preached to them in the types and shadows of Old Covenant rites. But the problem wasn't just claiming that the Old Testament saints were saved by law-keeping. He also taught that Jews and Christians have a different gospel, and that in the future, there would be a different gospel. His note on Revelation 4:6-7 taught there were four gospels, that the gospel for Jews - which was different than the gospel for Christians - was momentarily postponed until the church gets beamed up in the rapture, and then they'll have a different gospel again. Also, there will be a different gospel during the Tribulation period, different from either of those. It was a pretty good slathering of heresy, edited out of the modern Scofield version. But mostly, the version slid in notes about modern Israel. Genesis 12:3 is about Jesus, but Scofield's editors slipped in the note, "For a nation to commit the sin of anti-Semitism brings inevitable judgment." Lol. "Antisemitism" okay. The original Scofield Bible taught in the note on Deuteronomy 30:5 that Jesus would return and THEN Israel would be restored as a nation. Becuase that was the timeline that every premillennialist believed at the time. AWKWARD: If that's the case, then 1948 is NOT a prophetic fulfillment of anything at all. It's out of order for how Scripture says it will be fulfilled. The solution was simple: Just revise the Bible. So in the 1967 version, it says: "In the twentieth century the exiled people were restored to their homeland.” Oddly, they forgot to revise the note on Genesis 15:18, which still says that Israel will be restored at the return of Christ. I guess they forgot to swipe that one out, because to this day, it's still there, saying, "Israel is now in the third dispersion, from which she will be restored at the return of the Lord as King under the Davidic Covenant...” Oopsie. Virtually no premillennialist who believed in the physical restoration of the Jews to Palestine believed that it would come prior to the return of Christ, or prior to the redemption and mass conversion of the Jews. Why? Because the Bible is clear about it. The "return" of "Jews" to Palestine in 1948 was not a prophetic fulfillment, and not a miracle. It was a self-fulfilled prophecy, "fulfilled" after the fact, in which the prophecy was revised ex post facto to provide an important mythology to garner evangelical support for the modern Israeli state. Christian Zionism is a sham.
