On this day in 1987, Kneeland Helitack Firefighter Dennis Lee Cullins gave his life during the Lauder Fire in Mendocino County.

🛰️ A new view of wildfire is coming into focus.
CAL FIRE is reviewing early imagery from Earth Fire Alliance’s FireSat satellites as part of its Early Adopter program.
Designed specifically for wildfire detection, FireSat uses multispectral infrared sensors to identify small, early-stage fires and capture detailed information about fire activity. CAL FIRE is working with Earth Fire Alliance to compare the satellite data with observations on the ground and evaluate how it can support wildfire detection and decision-making.
The first operational FireSat data is expected to reach CAL FIRE before the end of the year, adding another potential source of information to support wildfire preparedness, mitigation and response.
Earth Fire Alliance and Muon Space recently released the first imagery from the three operational FireSat satellites launched in July, including views of active fires and small heat signatures that demonstrate the system’s capabilities.

CAL FIRE NEU firefighters responding to the report of a vegetation fire with one structure immediately threatened off Karchner Road and McCartney Road in Nevada County. Fire estimated at a half acre with a slow rate of spread.

As only Northern California can do, we’ve had the Bigfoot Fire and the Shenanigan Fire today.
Now that’s a flyover. 🚁✈️
Before Sunday’s matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, our aircraft took to the skies over Levi’s Stadium for a flyover during the National Anthem.
Our S-70i Firehawk helicopter and S-2T airtanker gave fans a look at two of the aircraft that help CAL FIRE fight California’s wildfires.
Our personnel were also recognized on the field during the game following the flyover.
Thanks to the San Francisco 49ers organization, CAL FIRE Santa Clara Unit, and Alma Helitack Crew for making this flyover possible.

After being impacted by the Tubbs Fire, Caitlin Grace found her way to CAL FIRE with a desire to help bring beneficial fire back to the landscape.
Today, as a Forestry Assistant II at CAL FIRE’s Jackson Demonstration State Forest, she gets to combine that passion with her love of research, from studying salamanders and mushrooms to better understanding the forests we work to protect.

Sunday marks the six-year anniversary from when the Glass Fire started in 2020. This fire ended up burning 67,484 acres across Napa and Sonoma counties, destroying 1,520 structures. It ranks today as the 12th-most destructive wildfire in California history in terms of structures lost.
This photo was taken on the night the Glass Fire broke out, captured just after 7 p.m. facing hillside flames above a vineyard off of Crystal Springs Road in Napa County.

His dad taught him how to surf and sparked a lifelong love of the ocean.
Today, Nicholi is a lifeguard and rescue swimmer with CAL FIRE’s San Luis Obispo Unit at Pismo Beach. He performs water rescues, responds to emergencies, and helps keep beachgoers safe. He also trains others, helping them build their skills and confidence in the ocean.
For him, the most rewarding part of the job is simple: helping people.
