The government will pay thousands toward your own backyard greenhouse and almost nobody claims it.
USDA's NRCS cost shares seasonal high tunnels through EQIP to help farms stretch their growing season.
Small farms and serious home growers alike have qualified through their local conservation office.
A single tunnel can add months of harvest on both ends of the year for a modest application.
Localize can help you find year round growers near you this season.

A little intro for folks for what I'm about on here: I'm a Catholic father of ten, homeschooling our family on a small homestead in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. My background is military; I tried out for the Navy SEALs in 2003, but was dropped from BUD/S with heatstroke. I switched to the Army and spent four years as a team leader in 3rd Ranger Battalion, deploying to Afghanistan four times. After leaving the Army, I lived nomadically in a tiny house on a trailer and worked close protection in Iraq and East Africa.
In 2017 I left overseas work to teach at our children’s small private school and be more present with my growing family. To help make ends meet, I turned my longtime hobby of calligraphy, illumination, and bookbinding into Tamburn Bindery, which I’ve now run for eight years.
Today I focus on classical and adventure-based education for our kids, help run a little forest school on our property, build woodland forts with them, and create artistic medieval-style books and illuminated editions. I have a variety of illumination courses and DIY book programs on my website, and I'm getting ready to launch my next publishing project in October: an illuminated manuscript edition of Gawain and the Green Knight. You can sign up to be notified when that goes live here: kickstarter.com/projects/tam…
I recommend you get in early; a lot of folks missed out on the illuminated Beowulf last year, so make sure you don't miss out on this one!

Friendly reminder that Hans Ørberg's Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata (and as supplement: William Most, Latin Natural Method) can actually teach you the Latin from scratch, if you apply yourself with sufficient diligence. Audio versions are on YouTube for proper pronunciation.

Turns out, we can make high quality goods in America. I just sourced these shirts that are 100% organic cotton and the cotton is grown, ginned, knitted, finished, and sewn in the USA. We’re going to make a nationalist, regenerative farm shirt.

It’s that time of year!! Fruiting and flowering - the reproductive stage of growth is upon many of my plants. Supporting them during this transition and in this stage requires feeding them differently. 80% of all the ions absorbed by plants will be nitrogen but it’s different during vegetative vs reproductive - the plants needs and wants ammonium over nitrate and then much less overall (so reduced and acidic over oxidized and alkaline). This is why some folks with unfinished compost or “hot” manure can’t seem to get things to fruit or flower - too much nitrate in the soil and in the plant. They instead need things like phosphate and micronutrients like copper. There’s too much to squeeze into a post but if you are interested in this sort of thing, there are new fall courses beginning soon and the books are all currently on sale.
