Congrats to @VTTurfgrass colleague Sam Doak on retirement from @VTCals after 20+ yrs of teaching as a Senior Instructor in the Ag Technology program. I like this vintage picture of Sam because although his 'stache & hair have a touch more gray now, the smile is always present!

Happy Brewers Opening Day everyone! Always one of my favorite days of the year. Can’t be in Milwaukee in person again with the Covid, but providing my support from home. Congrats to @ryan_woodley and @ZakPeterson9 and their staff for getting the field in great shape

Getting LOTS of reports of snow mold on untreated fairways and tees in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas. Treated areas appear mostly fine. These areas should fill in and recover on their own over time, not recommending any fungicide or seed at this time. Pics below from NW Chicago

If it seems 2021 has been colder than 2020, it is because it is, by quite a bit. At least in mid-south.

I've written over 50 musical parodies with turfgrass themes in the past few years. It was actually Mike Goatley's idea a few years back and I just took to it. This song started it all. This version was recorded in his basement. @VTTurfgrass

Gray leaf spot has been hanging out in our tall fescue trials in Raleigh, NC for a few weeks now, but recent rains and heat/humidity have caused what almost seems like an overnight explosion. Be sure you know the difference between BP and GLS. When in doubt, send a sample.

Wild violet and ground ivy can be a pain in cool-season lawns. Treated plots at left of image show good herbicidal activity but not death from 3-way products, etc. Spike these w/ 1-2 pint triclopyr and up 2,4-D rate to 2 qt/A of 4 lb/gal equivalent. Beware turf phyto in 🔥🌞.

Good reminder for those managing tall fescue/Kentucky bluegrass blends. Dollar spot (KBG) left and brown patch (TF). This one burns a lot of folks around here left wondering why their “brown patch” apps aren’t working. ID is the first step in managing any pest. #themoreyouknow🌈
