How has GBBO gone this long without a garlic bread challenge?

Pretty bold to lead with a reporter's bio on the home page. I know it's Sunday but ... wow

I envy your free time to think such things
Fuck's sake. How is it "unfair" to send someone home in a baking competition when one of the contestants literally presented Nigella with Floor Cake made of dense vegan sludge? #GBBO

Yep. And, I don’t have my glasses, but… do you smoke?

MIAMI BLUES (1990). The greatest Jonathan Demme movie that Demme himself didn't direct tho he did produce it. I quite like the novel, but actually prefer the film. Three perfect performances: gonzo Alec Baldwin, Fred Ward-as-Warren Oates, & the always genius Jennifer Jason Leigh.

I got to know Margot a bit; we met once in person, at a dinner in Seattle, and then kept in touch via email. I went to the auction of her mother's estate and asked Margot if it would be alright if I bought the famous desk where her mom sat down to write "Ask Ann Landers." She said her mom would've been delighted to see her desk "stay in the biz." Margot herself was a delight and I always enjoyed hearing from her. Condolences to her family.

Old person musing. I went for a walk with my three year old grand daughter this morning and in addition to all the farm animals, we saw a rabbit, a deer and loads of butterflies and she was constantly amazed. And my God, I was so so happy.

Never understood the appeal
Season four of ‘Ted Lasso’ drags Jason Sudeikis’s titular character, the pathologically optimistic soccer coach, out of the sunset he rode into at the end of the show’s third season. The new season finds Ted back in Kansas City occupying the life that was supposed to represent his happy ending. The series immediately undercuts that resolution, however, by placing him behind the checkout counter of a grocery store, while he drifts through what’s clearly a quiet, unsatisfying existence. The inevitable disruption arrives when Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Keeley (Juno Temple), and Higgins (Jeremy Swift) drop by, supposedly to scout a Kansas City Current match as research for AFC Richmond’s new women’s team, the Lady Greyhounds. But like Apple TV itself, they can’t let Ted go, and the trip is really a recruitment effort to bring him back to England to head up the new operation. The show now revolves around the women’s team, but “its treatment of women’s sports is broad where it could be specific and simplistic where it should be curious,” writes Quah. The problems they face are real — institutional sexism, underfunded women’s clubs, dismissive male audiences, but “the show’s depiction of them cries out for more nuance and complexity.” Read Quah on why there’s a great show to be made about this moment in women’s sports, but the soft-reboot season of ‘Ted Lasso’ isn’t it: nymag.visitlink.me/JMj1-k

Proud to join the Rockland County Teachers Association for Solidarity Summer at Red Barn Cidery in Congers! As a product of Hudson Valley public schools, I know firsthand the difference a great teacher makes. Our educators show up every single day for our kids, and we owe it to them to show up for them. That means paying them what they deserve, giving them the resources they need, and never allowing politicians to defund or undermine our public schools. Strong schools build strong communities and a stronger next generation. That's a fight I will never back down from.

A mom's job is to make sure the kids don't get hurt. A dad's job is to make sure they don't get hurt too much.

There was a time when I read almost everything he wrote. His movie encyclopedia and book Suspects are a form of obsessive worship. He wrote for Salon, right? nytimes.com/2026/06/19/books…
