All service on the Martin Luther King Jr. East Busway is detouring due to an active landslide.
While no debris has reached the busway, we have temporarily closed the affected section out of an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of riders and employees.
Buses are currently entering and exiting the busway at 26th Street, approximately one mile from the regular downtown access point at the intersection of Grant Street and Liberty Avenue.
PRT engineers have been deployed to the scene to assess the situation. We will continue to monitor conditions closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
This landslide is in a different location from the one that impacted a portion of the busway in October 2024.

PRT Deploying Snow Plows, Dump Trucks in Effort to Return to Regular Transit Service
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Pittsburgh Regional Transit will deploy a portion of its fleet of snow plows and dump trucks to clear snow from problem areas across the system and help restore service to normal following Sunday’s near-record snowfall.
Beginning Wednesday evening, PRT will deploy pickup trucks equipped with snow plows, along with dump trucks, to locations where buses continue to experience difficulty navigating snow-packed streets and accessing stops. Targeted areas include parts of Bon Air, Brookline, the Hill District, the North Side, Greenfield, Homewood, Lincoln Park, Polish Hill, and Fineview.
“While overall conditions are improving, some parts of the system are still impacted,” said Don Rivetti, PRT’s chief maintenance officer. “This approach allows us to focus on specific locations that continue to affect bus operations and access to stops, and to do our part as a good neighbor in the communities we serve.”
PRT has already cleared snow from its busways and is continuing work to ensure all stations and park-and-ride lots are accessible and safe for riders. The remainder of PRT’s snow-clearing fleet will be deployed throughout the system, with particular focus on locations where the agency has received complaints about access to and from heavily used bus stops. Crews will prioritize areas where snow buildup continues to impact boarding, accessibility, and overall service reliability.
“When challenges linger after a storm, it’s important that we work together to support residents,” said Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato. “PRT’s efforts are helping improve access for riders and neighborhoods across the county.”
On Thursday — and Friday, if needed — PRT crews will concentrate on the city's Central Business District, clearing bus stops and ensuring safe, accessible connections to transit in the region’s busiest corridors as weekday travel demand increases.
PRT continues to coordinate with municipal partners and monitor conditions across the service area, and thanks riders for their patience as crews work to restore normal operations and improve access systemwide.

The Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel is expected to reopen on Thursday, December 25, restoring normal rail and bus service between the South Hills and Downtown Pittsburgh.
The tunnel has been closed since February while crews replaced track inside the tunnel and completed other critical infrastructure upgrades.
With construction now complete, PRT has successfully tested the tracks and has begun conducting employee training in preparation for reopening.
Once regular operations resume, bus and rail service will return to using the tunnel and detoured rail service through Allentown will end. The “Subway Local” rail shuttle will be discontinued, and rail service will return to Station Square.
Regular fare collection will resume at Station Square, which had been included in the free fare zone, during construction.

The repair has been made and the tracks via Allentown have reopened
A crack on the light-rail track along Warrington Avenue discovered a short time ago will disrupt Pittsburgh Regional Transit's light-rail service for a portion of the day on Saturday.
Light-rail vehicles will operate from the southern end of their lines (South Hills Village for the Red Line and Blue Line and Library for the Silver Line) to South Hills Junction for the remainder of the day. Light-rail vehicles will also operate from Station Square to Allegheny Station, serving First Avenue, Steel Plaza, Wood Street, Gateway, and North Side stations in between.
PRT will operate shuttles between the bus stop across from Station Square Station (West Carson Street at Smithfield Street) and South Hills Junction. PRT employees will be at Station Square and South Hills Junction to assist riders.
Crews will begin to repair the track at the end of regularly scheduled inbound rail service tonight. Repairs are expected to be complete by mid-morning on Saturday.
The crack discovered today is not in the same location as the section of broken rail that was repaired earlier this week. Although the cause of today's crack is not known, steel rails contract and can be more prone to develop cracks in colder weather.
Riders with questions are encouraged to contact Customer Service by calling 412-442-2000, on X (formerly Twitter) @PghTransitCare or via live chat at ridePRT.org.
