@TheRSC I’ve just come back from the matinee of a sublimely funny, beautiful and really entertaining production. This will be my last “As You Like It” because I can’t imagine a better one and this is how I want to remember all the characters and the Forest of Arden.

The actors were superb, especially Jonathan Groff. The direction was pitch perfect, the music beautiful and the costumes and set were both imaginative and a joy to see. The standing ovation was universal, spontaneous and immediate.

🚨BREAKING: New Defence Secretary @wesstreeting strongly signals that defence spending will rise much faster under this new Labour government than the last. Asked directly if defence spending will rise in line with what the new chancellor has said must happen - to 3% of GDP by 2030 from just over 2% now - Streeting said: “The commitment the Prime Minister has given to the defence of our nation is clear and will be even more clear in the coming months”

I was arguing for this nearly thirty years ago, so. Im delighted that our county will be served by just two councils, saving money by replacing the seven currently doing the job but recognising the different sense of identity in the north and south. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm2g…

The BBC is grossly exaggerating the number of British citizens who want to be repatriated; the 130,000+ figure they are quoting is for people responding to the consular request for Brits to register so they know where and who they are, not for people wanting flights home

An alarmingly relevant quote from Pericles in a marvellous book given to me by my daughter today, “Everyday Shakespeare: Lines for Life”

It’s good to be able to welcome something really good - and this is a genuinely good decision. Well done @RhonddaBryant £23 million government package to support restoration of thousands of listed places of worship gov.uk/government/news/23-mi…

What distinguishes Trump’s threat to take Greenland by force on grounds of national security from Putin’s war to take Ukraine on grounds of national security?

Is @thetimes having a small joke with itself in this story about typos in Taylor Swift’s new book or is it also guilty of lack of attention to detail? I wonder….

A N Wilson writes powerfully about the inevitability of “disestablishing” the Church of England in today’s @thetimes . He argues he would be “would be cautiously optimistic about some form of religious revival if the CofE stopped being established.”

I suspect he is right to say that “in a few years we shall watch the whole edifice of the established church tumble”although he says it breaks his heart to write these words.

Sadly, Wilson speaks for many when he concludes that “..as well as being a Christian, I love the “vast moth-eaten musical brocade”, as Larkin called it. But the game is up, and enough is enough.”
