Much reaction and X comment on France riots depressing and predictable: usual non-sequitur claims on immigration, Islam, Hamas, etc. Pro-Israeli right gloating. Populists from Australia to Austria on it. No doubt riots were awful. Macron experiment failed. Choose quality sources.

Imagine if in 1943 FDR had decided that the US would stop helping Britain and instead would side with the Third Reich. That's a bit like what President Trump is now doing by cozying up to Russia as it tries to destroy Ukraine. Utterly shameful. A humiliating moment for the US.
There is an election happening in New Zealand. Oddly, this satirical video is the best aspect of the whole saga: facebook.com/share/r/19VLR1p…

The directors of NAZA explain why they made the film in an interview with The Daily today:
“We made this film in Hebrew with testimonies of the soldiers because we want to reach the Israeli society.”
Quiet, respectful, mostly grey audience for #NAZA in Auckland. Powerful, vivid comparison of Tel Aviv life and obliteration of Gaza. I knew of methods from @972mag @guardian and @antloewenstein but testimony was searing. Amalek, as Bibi promised. theguardian.com/world/2024/a…

Terrific new verb in this great @WSJ story on the grift of Ambassador Gilfoyle: "papering", meaning do not put on record what we say: “stop papering all these things. It’s really dangerous.” wsj.com/politics/policy/guil…
Glad to find fave Jeffrey Archer anecdote, in an old @andrewrawnsley piece, on asking him where the toilet in his non-penthouse was: '"Go past the Picasso, left at the Matisse.'" The paintings - in contrast to their owner - were not fakes.' Terrific: theguardian.com/uk/2001/jul/…
On this day of all days, worth reading this on Zionism from @TheAtlantic. Having found some elements challenging, the final paragraph was very poignant. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1…

Back in 2014, there was a man who was already aware of the irregularities involving Manchester City. That man now runs FIFA. The infamous Gianni Infantino, then UEFA General Secretary, abused his authority, shared confidential documents and, in short, outmanoeuvred the Investigatory Chamber, doing everything in his power to ensure that both Manchester City and PSG would merely receive a fine, avoiding a deeper investigation that could have led to a Champions League ban. All of these details were also revealed through Football Leaks.
Given his actions as UEFA General Secretary and, more recently, as FIFA President, I can only say, in my humble opinion, that Gianni Infantino has become a cancer on football and should have no place in the future of the game.

Latest KAL from @TheEconomist is in a sense an homage to Sam Neill, and also on the money, as usual. Cartoon:%20AI%20finds%20a%20way%0Ahttps%3A//economist.com/the-world-this-week/2026/08/13/cartoon-ai-finds-a-way%0Afrom%20The%20Economist
