My journey is a testament to a mother’s sacrifice, a mother’s faith, and God’s grace. Before I celebrate myself, I celebrate the woman whose sacrifices gave me a chance at life and a better future. Mum, you sold chang’aa in the slums, made sacrifices that the world may never fully understand, and did everything within your power to give me a better life. You carried burdens silently so I could have a chance at a brighter future. If I have come this far, it is because you refused to give up on me. You also introduced me to God, and He has been my anchor through every storm, every struggle, and every victory. The woman who gave me life also showed me where to find strength when life became difficult. Today, as I celebrate my birthday, I celebrate you too. Mum, I celebrate myself, but I honour you first. With Nairobi MCA @PerpsMO, we visited Waruku Primary and Excelite School in Waruku, Kileleshwa Ward. We supported the two schools with books for the learners, and enjoyed heartwarming interactions with the pupils. The visit highlighted the plight of APBET schools, which provide basic education for a good number of our Children in informal settlements. From lack of adequate facilities, inadequate books and constrained finances, APBET schools work against all odds to ensure learners are not deprived of their right to education. The lack of support and recognition of these institutions is a gap that requires urgent intervention, to ensure fair opportunity for quality education for all children regardless of their backgrounds. The Basic Education (Amendment) Bill 2025, which proposes to legally recognize APBET schools as formal institutions providing basic education in Kenya, has been stuck at Committee stage for months without progress. We call upon the National Assembly to treat the Bill as a priority legislation which directly impacts the best interests of Kenyan Children.
