🚧 Dear Architect: No, the ductwork won't fit between the open web joists. 🙃
MEP systems need space—physics wins every time. Great buildings = teamwork. Let’s design spaces where systems actually fit. 💡
P.S. See the pic? Why's the duct below the joists? 🤔
I can't see one without the other. Where are my Azymuth heads at? #SiteUnseen
Hell of an opportunity here:
I might as put it out to the X community ... I would consider adding another advisor to the Beyond Commercial team if they were an amazing fit. I have reached out to a few, but perhaps there are people who I haven't considered. Our focus is small business owner-occupied work from inception to generational transfer or eventual sale.
I don't always have the ability to listen to music while I'm working because I am constantly talking to people.
But today I'm bringing back this banger. Are you listening to anything good today?
Edited for Phil
I would rather have a small circle of friends who talk about:
• the songwriting of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen
• Late 80s and early 90s pro wrestling
• The cosmos
• Frogs

HVAC load calcs: Solar gains. My cat's fur hits 135°F in the sun, while the room stays at 65°F. HVAC isn’t the fix—it’s the building envelope. Want to beat the sun (a literal nuclear reactor)? Keep it out with solar shades, not more AC.
Special thanks to Taco for this demo.
Some plumbing basics to get your week started.
If you are adding one or two fixtures, the simplest way to avoid groundwork costs is to use a pump that can mount on the floor and discharge to a pipe that is above ground.
Remove a whole trade from the budget!
MEP basics for your Friday.
Gas pipe sizing is a function of not just the total load but the pressure loss caused by friction as a fluid flows through the pipe.
Notice the linear feet at each pipe segment below, and the load/capacity...
One of the best parts of working in this industry is you are trained to notice things. I can't walk into a building without looking up.
There's usually something cool up there fyi.
#SiteUnseen when you penetrate a fire rated floor or wall, you have to preserve the rating of the assembly.
Here is an example of a fire damper on a fresh air duct into an apartment through a one hour rated wall. Notice the access being provided on the underside of the duct.
We spend exorbitant amounts of money on HVAC to try and defeat the sun but HVAC will always lose that battle.
Awnings like this make it possible to enjoy the natural light without turning into a sauna inside.
