California's legislature just passed two bills that could save families $1,000+ per project on home solar, batteries, and heat pumps — by cutting permitting red tape and allowing remote inspections. ☀️⚡
AB 1738, authored by @AsmJuanCarrillo, gives families the right to request remote inspections... no more waiting hours for a five-minute check! SB 222, authored by @Scott_Wiener, streamlines heat pump permitting statewide.
Now they are on Gov. Newsom's desk. He has until Sept. 30 to sign.
As CA YIMBY's Brian Hanlon put it: California's affordability crisis was caused by a thousand bad rules nobody bothered to fix. AB 1738 fixes one of them. That's how you make things affordable — one dumb bottleneck at a time.

This bill makes it cheaper and easier to save money on your utility bills when you install a heat pump, home solar + batteries, or a re-roof.

North Carolina just streamlined permitting for home backup power systems like solar and batteries. This means no more waiting on local permitting offices to unlock cheap power and resiliency. Florida did the same thing last year. Now it's the fastest-growing residential solar market in the country. ☀️⚡️

Remote inspections didn't just speed things up for CA families; they were nearly free for Placer County to implement, and the county still came out ahead, shrinking its vehicle fleet as inspectors spent less time driving between sites.
