More than 80 fires on one Peak District farm in a single year. Over 400 hours spent fighting them.
That was the written evidence read out to MPs on 23 June, as red warnings spread across England.
Gamekeeper Richard Bailey, three decades on the moor, put it plainly: unless the fuel build-up is tackled, "it is only a matter of time before somebody is killed." Weeks earlier the Snake Moor fire ran within metres of the A57 — cross that road, he said, and the Derwent valley up to Sheffield goes up.
On rewetting, he spoke from the field. At a National Trust site rewetted 13 years earlier: "Within two yards of these dams, there was peat burning. We were putting out peat."
Restoration takes 50 years. Even wet bogs drop 20–30cm of water table each summer — exactly when the worst fires strike.
The witnesses' verdict: keep every tool in the box, burning included.

If producing food doesn’t stand on its own feet, why continue to do it at a loss whilst surviving via a completely different business? We’ll all starve! @PeterPrinsley

73 pages on giving farmers "certainty" and "confidence to invest."
Not one mention of the family farm tax that destroyed both.
You can't hit us with the family farm tax, then hand us a glossy roadmap to 2050 and call it confidence. 🫤
I love this line …….. “By 2050, the farming system will be firmly established on a consistently profitable,........”
………………… I'm not sure most farmers can wait until next Tuesday, never mind 2050, before they become profitable. Talk about kicking the can down the road.

⏰ Time is running out to complete the UK Lambing Survey 2026 - closing date: 30 June. The survey is gathering vital evidence from sheep farmers and vets to help build a clearer picture of the pressures facing the sector, from disease threats and vaccine supply issues to the impact of changing weather patterns. Every response matters. It takes around 12 minutes, is completely anonymous, and will help ensure future sector and industry decisions are informed by real experiences from the lambing shed. Watch the short video below from Phillipa Page of Flock Health explaining why the survey is so important and complete the survey here: lnkd.in/eDffzSuk

It's 21°c in my cellar and only 56% humidity, WHY have I filled it so full of stuff that I can't fit a comfy chair in it and stay down here for the night? 😭

I don't know if Kier will resign tomorrow - but what I think is an absolute national tragedy is that the Labour Party haven't got a single MP out of all 403 of them in parliament that are deemed good enough to replace him! They've had to go to the Mayor of Manchester, shoe horn him in as an MP, just so they have someone with a modicum of charisma and gravitas to be the next PM.
The lack of talent, business know-how and intelligence across all our MP's in all parties is what is, in my opinion, what is wrong with our country. I just wish we could fix it, but of course we can't because it relies on those very MP's to change this - and, as we all know, turkeys don't vote for Christmas!

This fun interactive tool allows you to draw circles anywhere in the world to see how many people are around you. A 3km circle around my home in Melbourne shows that I have almost 84,000 people nearby I can annoy in person with my maps!
