Quite a thought that a fin de siecle Glasgow artist inadvertently inspired Alien.

A video of Japanese conservators carefully removing papers that were recently discovered inside of a Buddhist statue dating back to the late Kamakura period (1280's-1330's).
A fascinating discovery inside a late-Kamakura-period Buddhist statue:
During the restoration of the Jūichimen Kannon 十一面観世音菩薩 at Shōjuin 正寿院 in Ujitawara, Kyoto Prefecture, conservators found 95 sheets of paper within the image. 94 of which bore stamped images of Kannon and one containing a handwritten text in ink.
The statue, approximately 60 cm tall, is the temple’s principal image and is normally kept concealed as a hibutsu 秘仏 ("secret Buddha"). In announcing the discovery, the temple described the Kannon images' function to magically protect the written document.
The contents and date of the document have yet to be established. It will be fascinating to learn what it reveals about the statue’s history and the people who placed these materials inside it.

After their steamer West Point burned and sank in 1910, 16 sailors and the kitten Flap were left adrift in an open lifeboat. For six grueling days and nights, the men took turns holding the kitten close to their bodies to keep it warm and dry. Upon their rescue, Flap became a celebrity and was sold for £30 ($6,000 in 2026) to raise funds for the shipwrecked sailors.

As great as Alien was, it didn't have a song and dance number, and Mel Brooks fixed that.

After abandoning the S.S. Texel under orders of a German U-boat captain who was preparing to sink their ship, the crew realized they had left their kitten Mickey behind. The crew pleaded with the German captain to allow them to return to their ship to save Mickey. The captain agreed to delay sinking the ship until Mickey was found and safely placed in a lifeboat with the rest of the men.

Buggey was born on the liner Winchester Castle and sailed 200,000 miles over a two-year period. When the liner returned to England to be taken out of service in 1960, Buggey was left by himself because he could not transfer to another ship with the rest of the crew without spending six months in quarantine. Not wanting him to be lonely, customs officials decided to place him in a basket and escort him to his new ship, ensuring that he did not set a paw on English soil along the way. Successfully avoiding the need for quarantine, Buggey rejoined his crew and continued sailing the world.

A giant illegal fireworks balloon reportedly broke apart over São Paulo, Brazil, creating a surreal scene in the sky. 🎈💥
These unmanned balloons, often launched during festive celebrations, can reach 50+ meters in height and are frequently loaded with fireworks. Brazilian authorities consider them illegal because they pose serious risks, including wildfires, explosions, property damage, and hazards to aircraft.
When one of these massive balloons drifts near airports, airspace restrictions may be imposed for safety reasons.
The scale of this thing is hard to comprehend until it starts falling apart mid air.
Would you have guessed this wasn't a passenger hot air balloon? 🤯
