Here's the reality: UNM football attendance growth has been the best in FBS for a couple years.
Yes, you can only get there if you started from a bad spot, but stop pretending like UNM football didn't. IT WAS AWFUL attendance wise here for years.
That this program under Eck is killing it and growing the attendance dramatically is fantastic. That doesn't mean people can't want more fans and know the stakes at play in this era. But there's a fine line between wanting more and so many fans turning the conversation so regularly every week to a negative storyline.
I've seen some of the same accounts that repeatedly talk about embarrassing attendance numbers begging ESPN to bring game day to Albuquerque on Oct. 24 for the NDSU/UNM game.
What's your messaging? That this is an embarrassment going on here or a showcase for the world to see?
And stop with the metro area crap. That's the most asinine metric ever to extrapolate into what a football program should draw. Tell me how many people are in Houston? Tell me what attendance is at football programs within a few hours New York City. ... Attendance is about culture and building in yout community a want, a desire to go to games.
UNM football is actually doing that right now after years of, well to be blunt, failing to do that.
And right now, here's the 5 year snap shot of UNM Lobo FB attendance:
2026 — 25,419 (every game has increased over previous)
2025 — 25,252
2024 — 16,001
2023 — 15,982
2022 — 14,966
I actually believe based on growth trends when a team is actually in a conference race until late in the season that UNM will average a nice little bench mark number of 32,581 over its final three home games, which would give the program its first annual average attendance of 29K since 2008 (back when the program wasn't really making money on ticket prices and also wasn't exactly know for accurate attendance figures).
The last three home games have 35K potential in each based on two MW contenders (NDSU and UNLV) and one traditionally popular opponent for attendance in Air Force.
Nevertheless, Lobo fans should want more.
Also true is Lobo fans should understand that a constant dialogue throughout the season about how much of a failure things are attendance wise sidetracks the reality of how special things are right now — a genuine moment in time a program like UNM has arguably never had where it will likely be favored in every regular season game left this season and be in the conversation until the end for the G6 invite to the CFP (likely in that conversation with favorite Boise State).
But significant improvement in attendance and building of a football culture in one where there's never really been one shouldn't be ignored in favor of constantly bitching about how it's not good enough.
Keep building, keep working is exactly what should be happening. Half a season into the second year of a good run when, in reality this is exactly the growth any program that is what UNM has been forever in football, would be happy with.
Not satisfied to stop growing, but also not complaining every single week about how much better it could be.
It's a weird, tiresome thing to have postgame shows and our weekly show turn into complaint hotlines about something that is improving dramatically and all while the snapshot in time right now for UNM football under Jason Eck is wildly successful, and improbable, for this place.
Also, there should be more Mountain Dews available in the press box!

New Mexico should be the Mountain West favorite with a returning backcourt of Jake Hall and Uriah Tenette.

Neil deGrasse Tyson: “There’s an intellectual scientific vacuum that is descending upon the US and that has consequences. If you’re okay with the US losing its scientific leadership, you will get the country you voted for. That country is one where we will no longer innovate. We will be less secure, less healthy, and less wealthy because some community of people who influence what this country is do not see the value of science”
