Many have been talking recently about WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum’s massive $200 million donation to Shaare Zedek Medical Center. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When Jan sold WhatsApp in 2014 for approximately $19 billion, the company hadn’t even made a dollar in revenue yet. After taxes, he reportedly walked away with around $8 billion. And instead of slowing down, within a year he quietly opened a foundation dedicated to charity. Today, that foundation holds over $3 billion in assets and gives away well over $100 million every single year. But what makes Jan different is where the money goes: Jewish schools. Hospitals. Chabad houses. Jewish organizations across Israel, America, Ukraine, Russia, and the former Soviet Union where he came from. He’s strengthening Jewish community’s across the world, and doing it quietly, without chasing headlines or attention. And because the foundation’s assets continue growing, the giving is only increasing year after year. At this pace, Jan Koum will give away more money than he personally made from WhatsApp. As it says in the Torah, the one thing Hashem tells us we can test Him with is charity. And you can clearly see the blessing here. Jan Koum was worth around $8 billion after selling WhatsApp. Since then, he’s given away billions to charity, and today he’s worth over $17 billion, more than double what he started with.
