I'd put money on it that a big part of Elon's concerns re population revolve around the growth based economic system we live by, its endless need for more consumers, and short-term profit margins based outcomes. When I's a kid the world population was around half what it is now and our civilisation wasn't at risk of collapse, via equations and our education system we could've actually stabilised our global population back then and humanity would've managed. I'd go as far as say that if we hadn't spent the last half century strip-mining our way through earth (our home) in pursuit of little more than short-term profit margins based outcomes earth would be in much better condition than what it's in currently.
