It appears #NIAID will shutter the genome data base we all use daily. This strikes me as a significant mistake that may well endanger much of our global progress. @BSPparasitology @AS_Para @ASTMH @TrendsParasitol @AmSocParasit @parasitesrule @PiParasitology

New in @Ecology_Letters w/ @JennSunday and @mioconnor!
We find that temperature-dependence of competitive ability (R*) is cold-shifted relative to population growth rates
✨competitive success is highest at temperatures that are sub-optimal for growth✨

Metabolic interactions in microbial communities are challenging to unravel. 13C metaproteomics can be powerful as it simultaneously preserves species identity and flux status. We showcase this in a yeast-LAB community 🙏🏽@natgabrielli @KamradStephan @TypasLab @EKafkia
Yeast + lactic acid bacteria co-cultures grow on amino acid-poor lactose medium, where none of these species can grow alone. 13C labelling & metaproteomics show amino acid & carbon flow between community members ➡️ bit.ly/3Ik9yCj @kiran_r_patil @MRC_TU @Cambridge_Uni

You know the explosive #respiration induced by #rewetting dry #soil? Thawing #frozen soil does it too, and for #microbes, the perturbations are similar doi.org/10.1016/j.soilbio.20… . This means that frost will affect the microbial response to #drought, and vice versa! Who knew!?
