Meet them where they are. When 7th math needed a reminder on integer operations, we modeled with algebra tiles, created rules, and shared our rules by bending the line.

In AVID we marked the text and took focused notes on our roles and responsibilities during tutorials. Teachers built relational capacity with name tents before engaging in Focus P.D. on the critical reading process.

7th Math used algebra tiles to conceptualize solving equations. They developed procedures to be able to solve equations without the use of the algebra tiles.

"Use photomath to solve this, what is a different first step you can take?"
It's 2021, if we are giving math problems from 1990 expect that students will use tools like photomath, mathway, etc... Instead of fighting it, change the question.
