1/17 Important thread 🧵 on the unnecessary complexity of pensions taxation and why it's unreasonable to expect individuals to "estimate" liabilities when administrators struggle. Please read to the end. #NHSPension #PensionTax

"I would like to ask whether you have communicated your concerns directly to the Prime Minister who, tonight, could similarly write to me and open pay negotiations with both junior doctors and consultants?" Read @DrPhilBanfield's reply to NHS England's letter on patient safety.

He also said the pay award was decided ‘by an independent pay review body’. The DDRB is not independent. The Government sets its remit and appoints its members. As a Conservative backbencher said earlier this year, the Government ‘basically rigs’ the process.

17/ It may sound like I'm nitpicking but it makes a BIG difference - all unions generally start from the beginning of austerity (and use RPI as a better guide to household costs). The rest of the economy has caught up (as per the charts), now its the turn of the public sector.

2/ You'll notice when ministers are in the media, they often talk about how hard "your viewers/listeners" have been hit by inflation. But what we need to do is separate fact from fiction (aka LIES), and it was 👇chart from excellent @jburnmurdoch @FT that really showed this well

It’s #WorldHeartDay 🫀 – let's spread the word to encourage more people to confirm their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register. Thanks to the kindness of donors and their loved ones, 207 hearts were transplanted last year in the UK to save lives. ➡️ orlo.uk/dEsbo

If you're a surgical/medical oncologist wrestling with industrial action next week, look at this chart, shortages of staff, oncologists, pathologists, anaesthetists, all partly driven by NHS pay & conditions becoming uncompetitive. We all need to fix this, take action next week.

Shame on you @NICEComms. Agreeing that healthcare professionals can offer pseudoscientific pain relief to women in labour is nothing short of a scandal. Shame on you. New NICE intrapartum guidelines nice.org.uk/guidance/ng235 1/

Thanks so much to everyone who’s watching my first TV series #CardiacArrest on BBC4 and iPlayer. Season 2 airs tonight at 10pm. And thank you to all the brilliant cast and crew who did everything to elevate scripts by a lowly junior hospital doctor with zero writing experience.

I talked about consultant's pay on @TimesRadio this morning – here are some charts to go with it 1. Consultants' pay has fallen about 21% in real terms since 2010. Their pay has been eroded more than that of other medical staff, and considerably more than the average salary

Today's article in @TheTimes makes the false claim that pay loss is "a national phenomenon". In fact, doctors have been hit harder than any other group. Source - @TomHCalver Sunday Times: xitter.cf/TomHCalver/status/1644…
Replying to @TomHCalver
But even that pay cut is a significantly bigger fall than the average worker has experienced in that time. It’s a bigger fall than nurses, although smaller than consultants, who have seen pay fall 20% since 2010

Authenticity is not about expressing every opinion you hold. It's about ensuring that what you voice reflects what you value. If you prize respect and kindness, your comments shouldn't be filled with contempt and cruelty. Ideas are worth sharing when they represent your ideals.
