In today’s @thetimes, I’m interviewing Sanjeev Kohli @govindajeggy about his new project addressing Glasgow’s relationship with immigration, now and then. “It’s very easy to point to the brown guy and say ‘he’s the source of your problems’. Some claim that the easy way of fixing that is stopping boats or deporting people and selling that as a way of solving their problems. “When 150 Saltires go up overnight, that’s not by accident. It’s premeditated by someone with money trying to influence an agenda.  “A lot of the guys with balaclavas don’t sound like they have Scottish accents, so there’s an element of manipulation and organisation and pushing an agenda. For several years in the 1980s, after my mum answered an ad in the Daily Record, we had family holidays on Jersey. We rented a house, Somenos, owned by a vicar and his wife, Fr John and Patsy, who decamped to the bottom of their garden to spend the summer in a shack they’d built, while renting their house out to holidaymakers. For four years we went back, joined by wider family and friends. These became the definitive holidays of my childhood. I had the chance to go back to visit Somenos, now the home of island artist Andrew Thompson, who took us a tour down memory lane through his orchard, sharing old photos and giving me a bag of apples from the trees we’d played football around decades before.
