National Coverage of Local Government Pension Scheme this morning, with my comments on Glasgow's just-declared record £12Bn *funding* surplus. 156% funded, even over-prudently assuming 5% future investment returns. Excellent, detailed coverage from @PatrickTooher. thisismoney.co.uk/money/mark…
Ridiculous, nonsensical non-denial denial from HM Treasury. What on Earth are they trying to hide from their own chancellor and PM? The fact that they should have spotted the taxpayer-owned likely now £200 billion LGPS surplus before now?
Glasgow is the canary in the mine, telling us how big this scandal is going to get.
The whole UK scheme had £517B in assets last March. If Glasgow's 158% funding was matched across the scheme, its total pensions bill would be £327B, and so a surplus of £190B of taxpayers' money. That was last March, it's obviously likely now to be over £200B. and Glasgow's share of that likely £20 billion.
The biggest yearly loss Glasgow PF has suffered in the last two crashes in 2009 and 2003 was -20%, followed by immediate recovery the following year.
The surplus isn't going away, HMT. In Glasgow or across the UK.
The piece also points out what we've been saying for some time: the average annual payout from these pensions is little more than £5,000 a year: gold-plated, they aren't.

Today's Financial Mail on Sunday. Government debt. A fund manager's frank view about an activist investor. Why bots can replace brickie. Snacks of the healthy kind and the boom in the tiny sort for people on 💉weight loss drugs.
The nation’s credit card is maxxed out, so we’re taking out a new one just to pay interest on the old one - but at a much higher cost. The public finances in a nutshell #Budget mol.im/a/16180359
Goal of the Month, if not the season. Sensational first touch of the ball on the hop with the outside of his right foot while running at full pace and then a sublime finish with his left without breaking stride. Some pass from the goalie too. And all in of the Coventry fans!

Nice try but John Healey only became Chancellor in July.
Replying to @JamesMelville
1976: Chancellor Healey forced to borrow £2.3bn from the IMF. First time in British history.
2026: Chancellor Healey borrows £16bn in the month of June alone - £2.3bn every 4 days.

Yes, the SpaceX IPO countdown has started. The people who manage your savings and pension will be wondering whether to back Elon Musk's rocket company. Maybe the moment to read the business pages... 🚀

My thanks to @PatrickTooher for including my question re @AskNationwide’s #FairerShare policy in today’s @DailyMail on Sunday:
thisismoney.co.uk/money/mark…
“James Sherwin-Smith, who hopes to become Nationwide's first director representing members in over two decades, questioned why only a minority of them received payouts.
'Is there a better use or more equitable distribution of members' capital?' He asked.
It’s interesting to note that:
1) following the acquisition of @VirginMoney, #Nationwide paid a one-off Big Thank You of £50 to ~12million (ie 3/4 of Members). But for the last 3 years, it has decided to share profits with 1/4 of Members instead.
2) in 2007, Members were asked to vote on whether to donate >1% of profits to #charity each year. No vote was offered re the Fairer Share.
3) less than 700k Members voted at the last #AGM.
