We’ve spent years talking about the Dodgers payroll, but are we asking the WRONG question? Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, Cleveland… year after year, these organizations find ways to compete without spending like the giants. At what point do big-market teams stop obsessing over analytics and start POACHING the scouts from these organizations? Maybe the biggest competitive advantage in baseball isn’t payroll. It’s knowing how to IDENTIFY TALENT that can compete when the lights are the brightest?..

Who else from the 2020 pitching class are you still buying? Crochet is the clear #1. Strider and Detmers are the next tier. Then you’ve got two quiet risers having real years right now: Cade Cavalli and Kyle Harrison. Cavalli (22nd overall) finally healthy and sitting around mid-2s WAR. Harrison (the HS lefty the Giants paid first-round money for in the 3rd) posting legit mid-rot arm in Milwaukee. Maybe they catch the big three, yet both are becoming exactly what this class was supposed to produce. Development just isn’t linear.

Cole Carrigg was a signable 2020 HS bat. Wyatt Langford was a low-profile Florida HS guy most national lists barely ranked. Both took the college route. Both are running nearly identical wRC+ in the big leagues right now (Carrigg ~124, Langford ~122). The 2023 college radars looked nothing alike. One had elite contact and almost no power. The other had loud tools and production. Same class. Same age. Same current production. Completely different developmental paths. Would Carrigg be the same player if he’d signed in 2020? Or did the three years at SDSU create the exact profile that is working?

The 2020 draft radar on Pete Crow-Armstrong still lives rent free in my head. Bottom 5% production. Bottom 10% contact. Bottom 25% swing and miss Top scale EV/Nitro. High GB%. Analysts scream “pass.” Scouts who bet the physical tools + launch-angle projection say “all in.” Six years later he’s the highest-PV player from the entire class. 19th Overall...

"College is better for players than minor league teams" Of the 20 leaders in fWAR this year, 13 were drafted and signed out of high school while 7 were drafted out of college.
It's a money grab but I actually like the idea of making the draft focus on college players. Too many great physical athletes bomb in MLB because they weren't developed right. College is better for players than minor league teams and getting more prep talent helps everyone

Top 10 highest valued contracts in the Major Leagues. 8 of 10 did not attend college, it is more valuable to be young than good. Regardless of what your feelings are, signing younger is a major factor. Ai left off Harper from the list who also signed at 17

Kamdyn Perry was the Rangers 501st overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, drafted out of high school. Perry had a K-BB% of 3.4% in 2024, 7.9% in 2025, and has gotten that number all the way up to 18.3% in 2026. Kamdyn is one of the many great pitching development stories to come out of the Rangers farm in the last few years. I decided I wanted to shine a light on several of those arms that deserves more attention, and first up on my list was Kamdyn Perry. Read more here: theprospecttimes.com/monday-…

Strikeouts looking tell you a lot about a hitter...who knows the zone and who doesn't
Landon Hairston just got tossed 😳 He will miss Arizona State’s next game. Hairston is the No. 6 prospect in the tournament, regardless of class. 🎥 @11point7

Some important perspective on Colt Emerson, Bryce Eldridge, Kevin McGonigle and AJ Ewing… Had they ended up going to college, they’d finally be draft-eligible two months from now. Instead, they’re big leaguers. Colt Emerson is three months younger than Roch Cholowsky.

The # of coaches I’m learning who tell their prospective players to walk away from a pro job w/ $150k + school is CRAZY…know of at least $1mil turned down over last couple years that might get $100k in 2026.
