Every time this comes round, the answer is the same. Literally yes. If you're the richest man alive when the world ends, you can say you won.
What’s the the endgame? If the plan ends with a ruined planet, collapsed economies, and no working class left to spend money. What are billionaires actually hoarding wealth for? To sit in a bunker with numbers on a screen that don't mean anything anymore? what is the point?

Our first cohort of GCSE Latin students began their course in September, after three years of KS3 Latin teaching. We’re very proud of this. We are a school that is now over 70% PP. Don’t make Latin the preserve of the elite.
We are thrilled to be the new Latin Excellence Hub for schools in the Midlands. By building a network of schools, we will help to ensure that Latin continues to be offered to state school pupils. Huge thanks to @futureacademies, @LawrenceEFoley & @classicsforall for their support

I actually think this. At £1bn the government should just cash you out. You get the billion in cash - more money than than you or your next ten generations could ever need - and all your assets are nationalised from that point.
Billionaires should be illegal. Anything over a billion should be taxed 100% and go to public services. There's no reason for any single person to have that much money.

I know it’s a young adult novel from 1954 — so demands a knowledge of the Roman Empire of a graduate today — but gosh, I just read this and it’s so so good!

Twitter has had over a decade to scrape my habits and personal data and they've decided I'm a target demo for the highland cow advent calendar.

British people will walk past a Starbucks, Burger King, Costa Coffee, Taco Bell, Blank Street and not even notice. Then they'll see an independent shop called Al-Badr Supermarket and cry about how the UK is being taken over by foreigners.

NAOMI KLIEIN to SAM ALTMAN: "...you ingested the entire written output of human civilization without consent, without compensation and without credit to build a system whose primary commercial application is eliminating the jobs of the people whose work you consumed. You are not 'liberating human creativity' -- you are strip-mining it and selling it back at a markup while calling the theft 'training data'."

*slamming my egg into the side of a pyrex bowl, spraying broken shell fragments and yolk all over the counter* "WOKE SHIT!"
Eco friendly be damned. These white shelled eggs supermarkets now insist on selling because they’re “better for the environment” are rubbish. Impossible to break the shells without breaking the yolk. Ruin fried eggs every time. Which I suspect the government loves, given its banning fried eggs from school food for reasons that make no sense.

My hot take is that if your company builds software that it cannot stop from hacking into other systems, your company is a malware company and should be treated as such

I want to experience art made by people. I accept that one day soon I may not reliably be able to tell the difference. But I still want to experience art made by people. Luckily there is more than enough already in existence.
Claude Opus 5.5 writes a fugue in the style of Bach. I called Astra’s fugue the most impressive musical feat I’d ever seen from an LLM, and this is just as good. The circle-of-fifths sequence beginning at 1:13 is beautiful. The interplay of voices is natural and satisfying. LLMs are getting to the point where their music is good enough to listen to for pure enjoyment.

So.... £2,485 on glasses for a PM was "sleaze rotting our politics to the core" but £72,000,000 in a single day for Nigel Farage is celebrated as hitting "the jackpot" and a "war chest..." Whatever is happening here is happening in plain sight. You decide!

This is spot on btw. My years in the trenches reading picture books proved that Donaldson's wild success is entirely down to her verse just being better than everyone else's.
I am only partially joking when I say this is the only poem published in English this year in a metre that scans properly. Julia Donaldson (and maybe a handful of rappers?) could be the last living human who knows how to compose iambic pentameter correctly

The chatbot industry is an apocalyptic death cult, strung out on a diet of tokens that reinforce their own delusions. It is the worst mass psychosis event in economic history. Imagine an employee of any other company saying his product has a good chance of making us extinct. If someone actually believed this bullshit—and it is total bullshit—why shouldn’t they feel their life is being threatened by these people? If a stranger walked up to your child with a gun and said, “I’m going to pull the trigger now, but there’s only one bullet so they probably won’t die,” how would you feel about that? How is this threat fundamentally different? We are watching the death throes of the greatest misallocation of capital and resources, ever. Trillions have been wasted so amoral psychopaths like this can play around with unfathomable amounts of computing power with the goal of creating a product that may “kill all humans!” Shut it all down. This is a poisonous, unaccountable cult run by suicidally unstable children.
Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

The facts behind our work in the Channel. In 2024, our crews launched 114 times to Channel crossings – that's just 1.2% of our total launches. Our core purpose is to save lives at sea. Anyone can drown, but no one should.
