MIAMI, Florida – Mark Gronowski is back on the Miami practice squad, which adds to the tumultuous timeline of how this franchise has handled him so far. The Dolphins signed him as an undrafted free agent in May, waived him August 7, then brought him back August 16 when Quinn Ewers went down with a groin injury. He got two real preseason looks, going 2/5 for 1 yard and 9 rush yards against the Giants, then 4/8 for 97 yards and 28 on the ground against Atlanta. Overall, he went 6/13 for 98 yards, no scores, no picks, and 37 rushing yards. On Cutdown Sunday, they traded Ewers to Jacksonville, waived Cam Miller, sent a 2028 6th-rounder to Green Bay for Kyle McCord, and kept Malik Willis as the only quarterback on the 53. McCord just threw for 446 yards and 4 touchdowns in the preseason. Jeff Hafley said he wanted two quarterbacks on the active roster. Putting Gronowski on the practice squad if he cleared waivers keeps a dual-threat developmental piece in-house without burning a 53-man spot on a rookie who was never going to beat out Willis or McCord this week. It seems more like roster math rather than a snub. It should also be noted that Iowa DE Max Llewellyn is among the 9 players Miami recently sent to the practice squad. None of this erases what Gronowski already proved. He won two FCS titles at South Dakota State, took the 2023 Walter Payton Award, and finished college with 12,049 passing yards, 103 passing touchdowns, 2,312 rushing yards and 53 rushing scores in 68 games. At Iowa in 2025, he started all 13, went 9-4, threw for 1,741 yards and 10 scores, and ran for 545 yards and 16 touchdowns, which was the school record for a quarterback, plus the Big Ten lead in rushing TDs. Willis is the starter. McCord won the backup job on tape. Gronowski stays in the building as the next man up if someone gets hurt. For a team that just tore up its quarterback depth in 48 hours, this is a clean, cheap way to hold onto a winner until the snaps are actually there.
