#HilaryBuckleyAward This report highlights a case of congenital pure erythroid leukemia in the placenta of a 25-week stillborn fetus. Histology shows infiltration of fetal vascular spaces by erythroid blasts. Karyotype showed no evidence of trisomy 21; an uncommon occurrence in congenital leukemias #BAGP2026

1/2. Middle aged chap complaining of nasal congestion and gritty material dripping down the back of his throat then later sneezed out this foreign body which he gave to his GP. At lower power it would be easy to write it off as non-descript “mucoinflammatory material”..

Plexiform schwannomas can be associated with central neurofibromatosis (NF2); finding this lesion may be a clue to screen the patient for central nervous system schwannomas. Note the intranuclear cytoplasmic invagination (arrow). #UMiamiPath @ModernPathology @science_press

After an extraordinary year as co-Australian of the Year 2024 alongside his colleague and friend Professor Georgina Long AO, it was an honour to welcome RCPA Fellow @ProfRAScolyer and guests to RCPA HQ this week to celebrate his remarkable contributions to science and medicine.
At the event, the RCPA was proud to announce two new initiatives:
⭐ The Richard Scolyer Innovation Plenary Lecture – to be delivered annually at Pathology Update – to spotlight groundbreaking ideas and visionary thinking that shape the future of medicine and pathology.
⭐ The Richard Scolyer Research Award – a $100,000 research grant awarded over four years – to support early-career anatomical pathologists conducting skin cancer research. This award is designed to nurture emerging talent to push the limits of what we know, embrace curiosity and transform ambitious ideas into meaningful outcomes for patients.
With these initiatives, we are not just recognising past achievements – we are investing in the future of pathology. Inspired by Richard's dedication to innovation in science, we hope they will ensure the spirit of discovery continues to shape the way we diagnose, understand and treat disease for generations to come.
In recognising Richard’s work, we extend our very best wishes to Richard and his family as he continues his personal journey with cancer – and thank him for his courage, generosity and determination in turning that journey into one that is already making a profound difference for patients around the world.

A little pitfall for when we get too carried away with immunohistochemistry when we already knew the answer. This gastric leiomyoma was near the esophageal junction. Those Cajal cells are just growing along with the lesion, bothering no one.

73% of OGDs were for low yield symptoms and only 10% had any significant pathology. But how do we stop doing them? Patients expect and it’s increasingly difficult to say no when GPs refer, until we have the UGI equivalent of a FIT things will never change – at South West, England
