If the leaked Anthropic IPO financials are correct I think it's worth studying the history of early railway companies. Critical technology demanding outsized capital investment but poor profits, most of them fold up into 2nd & 3rd Gen entities which realize alllll the gains

As I've started following SpaceX much closer this year, I've realized how many people are seemingly actively rooting for them to fail
What the hell is this about?
SpaceX is literally doing some of the most insane engineering magic humanity has ever seen (safely) and it's already changing the lives of millions of people around the world for the better (Starlink)
I'll never understand. Some people are so weird

ok i think i finally figured out why alignment has gone basically nowhere after 15 years and several billion dollars. the problem is hard sure. but have you met the people in charge of it
1) the leadership does not know how computers work. ask one what happens when you type a url into a browser and watch them start sweating. dns is a spooky word. they genuinely believe the model lives in "the cloud" like a ghost haunting a castle
2) zero idea how large scale distributed systems work. never been paged at 3am. never watched one bad bgp announcement take half the internet offline. their big threat model is the ai "copying itself across the internet" like its a floppy disk virus from 1998. brother it needs 50 megawatts, a liquid cooling loop and a personal relationship with jensen. it is not escaping onto your smart fridge
3) they dont understand the stack they are supposedly protecting us from. ask about inference servers, kv cache, batching, egress, rate limits. blank stare. ask how the model will seize the power grid and you get a 45 minute answer with a hand drawn diagram and three links to their own blog
4) nobody can define an agent. ask ten of them and you get eleven definitions and a 30 page google doc. to the rest of us an agent is a while loop that calls tools and eats a 429 every thirty seconds. to them its a digital god in its larval stage. my agent cant book a dentist appointment without asking me three times if im sure
5) they started from "everyone dies" and worked backwards so every result is bad news somehow. model refuses, deceptive. model complies, sycophantic. model does well on evals, well now its scheming about the evals. i cant think of a single thing a model could do that would get them to say ok maybe we're fine
“You’ll own nothing and you’ll be happy” front and center with “just pay the subscription to access the features”… it takes maybe four lines of code to make that “just pay the subscription to keep the car from bricking in your driveway.”
I’m not in Ohio, so it’s up to Ohioans if they think their state can survive a pro-PRC, pro-crime, black supremacist, radically feminist, transsexualizing children governess- at the same time I 100% agree with this sentiment towards Ramascammy.
Replying to @BonifaceOption
Destroying any further national ambitions that Vivek has is reason enough to vote against him. Yes, we might hope that the Boomercon MAGAtards would get it through their thick skulls that the GOP doesn't need DEI candidates, and, no, they probably won't learn that lesson. Stomping Vivek's ambition flat is justification enough. Acton won't be able to do much when the Ohio legislature has GOP supermajorities in both chambers. Short term pain for the long- term gain of driving Vivek out of serious consideration for any elected office.
It’s mildly heartwarming that Americans are so keyed in to Marriott properties for travel that everyone trying to post about the Greens/Labour’s pet terrorists attempting an attack on RAF Fairford keep calling it “RAF Fairfield” because of autocorrect.
Given the Labour Party’s current importation of infinite Islamists, rapists, & rapist Islamists, & the role British police have in suppressing any attempts at justice against them, it’s amazing that the cops didn’t offer to drive the “plotters” onto Fairford themselves.
What we know so far: not much, but a lot has been building up to it.
Several men have been arrested near RAF Fairford, the base Britain authorised the US to use for strikes on Iranian missile sites.
Gloucestershire Police declared a major incident this morning in Whelford, evacuating residents to a nearby leisure centre while army bomb disposal teams examine several vehicles.
FPCON DELTA, the US military's highest threat level, was raised at the base on credible intelligence before today, and the Pentagon says that setting applies when an attack has either happened or is believed imminent.
Iran's IRGC has already publicly called Fairford a "legitimate target" over its role in the strikes.
Police are calling it "contained." They haven't said what from.
I think true silence at night is probably the greatest sign of wealth. It’s made possible either by a perfect climate (no need for AC), enormous construction (your palace is your buffer) or vast tracts of land (self-explanatory.) Meanwhile for the rest of us, there are earplugs.

oh god i never considered you could learn english as a second language from australians. like some kind of sick tasteless joke
This is just being low intelligence at its core. There are a few dumb people who are also paranoid, but really this is just a Greco-English jargon term for describing that ignorance is bliss.
“Huh, maybe the little girl from Signs was really just thirsty” I say as I take a swig from one of the three bottles of water I found I’d left in the office upstairs.
This is quite possibly the only road project ever completed in a timely manner in the entire history of Hawaii since 1967.
If you rotate it it becomes a fairly legible piece of stone carving from any given pre-Columbian American site.
Many guys say this, and the almost polar opposite, about being a NEET in Tokyo or something, but really “we” just fantasize about the lack of being accountable to others for our time, yet able to get the basics in an inviting place. A welfare-ish vacation, if you will.
Not pictured: the sound of a trillion bugs (half of which have landed on you, personally), people slapping at mosquitoes, gritas and fireworks from all directions (it’s an unimportant Monday), and borderline undrinkable water.
Scrolled the comments for quite a while, did not see “Song to the Siren” in any version mentioned.
This is mostly because “the veil” is an actuarial term and because of massive, billion-dollar federal subsidies, people get to build giant tower houses on sandbars and write them off every two years as a total loss for fun and profit.
Also hilariously people use footage from the OBX as “climate change” hysteria propaganda while getting lippy with you if you mention that most of the islands there were in completely different places on maps from 150 years ago.
