Between here and there, then and now and what is and all the dreams we have runs the #twitchel. Hard to see twixt thorns and knotted branches and concrete rising high. But it’s there. The path less trodden to simply somewhere else when the here is too hard to bear. #Landmarksvss

The First Farmer walks up the #twitchel to see the #home he left behind. He won't go in: his widow still lives there, but the house belongs to his eldest boy now.
He takes a moment to admire the well-kept fields, tips his hat to the mommet, and fades away.

The mommet watched the coffin and its tiny #train of attendants as they made their slow journey down the #twitchel. The man in the box gave him form, gave him sticks to stand with, gave him land to watch, gave him purpose, His hand-carved eyes cannot weep.

The boys do not #complain about the weight they must carry down the #twitchel, nor the chores that must be finished before they can rest and reflect on the future. The man they buried taught them that life is hard work, but work is a blessing.

The funeral caused little #delay: farms wait for no man. The cattle were fed and milked before the First Farmer's sons bore him down the #twitchel to the granite orchard. A few words were spoken over him, but they ended with a gruff, "Best get back to work."

Where the #twitchel meets the steading there is a stone older than the idea of farms: an erratic; a granite #skerry in a sea of mud. After the funeral the First Farmer's first son sits atop it to sip his ma's griggle cider, watch the sun set, and remember.

The First Farmer walks the boreen with a weary sigh. It seems longer today, stretching to the horizon under a cornflower sky.
In time, as earth and hedges wax and wane, his descendants will call the path he cut the #twitchel, the holloway, the sunken lane.

It's been eighteen months since the rabbit soodled through the smeuse; the heatwave is a distant memory, a slow moment binned by a rush hour mind. Summer is half-forgotten, but as he #hops down the #twitchel snow drops around him, and he thinks of spring.
