6 September 2022 – Queen Elizabeth II carried out her final engagement at Balmoral Castle. The Queen accepted the resignation of her 14th Prime Minister & appointed the 15th Prime Minister of her 70-year reign. It would be the last time we saw Her Majesty, two days before her death.

Sad to hear of the death of Lord Laming. A thoroughly decent and good man, wise and kind, and a privilege to have known him. Couldn't put it better than this tribute, given in the Lords this week by the Bishop of Hereford: theyworkforyou.com/lords/?id…

Happy Oak Apple Day! 🍎👑 As the Advent-Trinity cycle of Sundays draws to a close, here is a prayer from the Accession Day service for the King, our Nation, and the Church, entrusting all to God, who, we have seen, provides for all things and rules over us in power and in love.

As I leave Rome today, I do so with profound gratitude for all the encounters, and all that I have received, over these days of pilgrimage. From the warm welcome from our Catholic brothers and sisters, to praying and worship with Anglicans and Catholics, to seeing churches supporting those in need. I’m particularly grateful to Pope Leo XIV for his welcome, his words of hope, and the opportunity to pray together. It’s been a privilege to reaffirm the friendship and bonds of affection between our Churches that have grown over recent decades. May God bless our ongoing pilgrimage as we seek the unity that Christ prayed for. In our divided world, Christians must have a more hopeful story and keep modelling something different - walking and working together to serve the world that God loves. Whatever may divide us, the love of Jesus Christ is greater. Our world needs the Gospel, and we are called to share it together. I leave Rome today with gratitude and prayers for all the people I have met and for continuing friendship and partnership - and with a renewed sense of the reality that in Christ we are one.

Pope Leo with a jar of Lambeth Palace honey, from the hives in the Lambeth garden.
It was an honour to meet and pray with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV @Pontifex this morning. I’m deeply grateful for his gracious welcome at the Apostolic Palace. In the years to come, I will remain united with the Pope in prayer – for peace in our world, for justice, and for every person to discover the fullness of life that God offers. The ecumenical pilgrimage is always one we make together, as a fellowship of Christians seeking the unity for which Christ prayed. Your Holiness, as your sister in Christ, in a spirit of prayer, friendship, and hope, I commend our shared journey into the hands of God. Lunch with a community of Roman Catholic sisters keen to talk about their admiration for Archbishop Mullally. They care for the sick and were struck by the symbolism of her nurse's belt buckle having been reused to hold together her cope, honouring the vocation to serve and heal.

Today at @Synod, I spoke about poverty and the Church, reflecting on 40 years since the Faith in the City report was first published. We give thanks for the enduring impact of that report and we recommit ourselves to ending poverty in all its forms. You can read more about it here: churchofengland.org/media/ne…

Today at @Synod, I spoke about the Church’s role in the health of our communities. Care involves the whole of life - spiritual, physical, social, mental and emotional - and it is something we are called to hold together with dignity and compassion.

We've opened Liverpool's old church of Our Lady and St Nicholas to a new Georgian Orthodox congregation; their bishop visiting the city for the first time. Long toasts were offered afterwards, including to the King, for the peace England is giving this community. @LiverpoolParish
