Okay, let’s talk a little bit about what’s going on in my country (France), because it’s a very important topic and many people aren’t necessarily aware of certain things. For weeks now, there have been protests, first by high school students, then on October 17 by the “Yellow Vests” movement. We’re protesting because France has a government that doesn’t listen to its people, a government whose president is one of the worst we’ve ever had. Rising gas prices, the government’s refusal to lower taxes on fuel, the deplorable state of high schools, the high cost of living compared to low wages, the poverty line, and I could go on! On October 17, we witnessed several things: protesters, rioters, and police. The protesters do not agree with the rioters’ approach, especially when it targets businesses, and more specifically, small businesses that are also trying to survive, but a certain degree of violence is necessary because a peaceful protest leads nowhere. For example, the 1944 demonstration for women’s suffrage involved a certain degree of violence; as a result, women were able to vote from that point on. As for the police, there have been numerous instances of excessive force: a severed hand, a lost eye, and brutal treatment of minors (a barrage of blows while they were on the ground). The police kill, yes, they kill, and they are the opposite of what they should be, which is to protect people, especially at times like these. Even when we’re peaceful, the police use tear gas on us, and the media twists our words as much as possible to discredit a party that’s trying to make its voice heard and bring about change I’ll say it again: we (the protesters) do not condone rioters because they completely distort our demands, but we’re also angry at the police for their excessive use of force (as the videos show) and at the government for doing absolutely nothing for years. It’s been five years since I took my exams, and even back then, there were already many complaints about the lack of ventilation due to the extreme heat in the classrooms. Today, practically nothing has changed, and teachers have been laid off, fewer teachers, a stressful system that destroys students’ futures (Parcoursup), etc. Another point where I’ll be simple and straightforward, because, as a certain YouTuber puts it, “hates this”,is that anime is political. SNK, One Piece, etc., are works where politics is at the very heart of the story. He doesn’t like it, but if he thought a little beyond his stats, he’d understand that some anime address political issues more directly and tackle certain political topics more thoroughly than his own government does in his country. We have every right to use quotes from anime to protest, because these quotes reflect what we are currently experiencing in France Thank you
