A giant inflatable pumpkin went on the run in Cary, North Carolina, near Raleigh, after strong winds from Isaias sent it rolling away.

An Ethiopian invasion of Eritrea now seems more likely than at any other time this century. The future is unknowable, but the past contains clues. This piece from last year discusses some of the unresolved historical questions behind the current crisis: economist.com/middle-east-an…

The Flock saga is reaching truly chilling levels: when an Illinois college tried to cancel its contract and the company refused to take down its cameras, the college covered them. Then workers in unmarked vehicles repeatedly removed the coverings. theverge.com/tech/1009411/el…

Slowing down AI development and regulating it is an 80/20 issue. Whether it’s about surveillance, data center pollution, or catastrophic risk, it’s very smart for @AbdulElSayed to take on Big Tech and stand with everyday people.

My uncle noticed his monthly water and sewage bill jumped from $85 to $290 over the last six months, even though his family didn't fill a single pool or leak a gallon. He called the municipal water board to report what he assumed was a meter error. The clerk explained that the city sold the local water treatment facility and underground main grid to an infrastructure equity fund last year to cover municipal budget deficits. When my uncle asked why that tripled his rate, she told him: "The private operator added a quarterly 'grid modernization surcharge' and an 'infrastructure maintenance access fee' to every residential account." Nothing about the pipes, pressure, or water quality improved. Private equity isn't just buying houses and daycares anymore. They are acquiring local utility monopolies so they can bill working families a mandatory tax on drinking water and flushing the toilet.

I know it’s just trees but they are cutting them down for no reason. For what? Who needs more golf?
Beginning today, National Park Service crews will remove more than 500 trees at East Potomac Golf Links, according to a new filing in federal court. The Park Service says the removals are part of an effort to restore the course’s historic character. wapo.st/4jOZkwP

Look what the Russians were doing to r/alabama 😭
Reddit data show a massive decline in activity on some subs since the attack on Russian data centres. The Irish politics sub was down as much as 80% from one center.

Very honored that my last story for @washingtonpost, which published after I was laid off, won Le @PrixBayeux. It detailed the terrifying journey of a soldier trapped in the kill zone for 177 days. Was so glad to accept it in person with Anastacia Galouchka and Serhii Korolchuk.

The feed is fake….but it has real life consequences.
If confirmed, this is telling: Russian data centres get hit, and online activity around AfD suddenly plummets. 📉 So much talk about German patriotism… then the connection from Russia goes down. 🤔🇷🇺

Huge drop in Google searches for various health disinformation topics following the Ukrainian strikes on Russian data centers. It makes you wonder how much of the “turbo cancer, ivermectin” nonsense is really fueled by Russian bots, & how many Americans they’ve killed…

Nicolas Cage says he’s “probably not” working with Amazon again after refusing to sign an AI waiver for #SpiderNoir: “Amazon is a very AI-friendly company, to the tune of $50 billion invested in OpenAI,” Cage said at #NYCC. “I am not an AI-friendly actor, so it’s like, connect those dots! I’m not a member of their club. I didn’t sign the waiver to let him use AI on ‘Spider Noir.’ I’m probably not going to be working with that studio again, but that’s okay.” variety.com/2026/tv/news/nic…
