The San Bernardino County Superior Court yesterday granted in part and denied in part Chino Valley Unified’s parental notification policy. We disagree with the court’s reading of Mirabelli. SCOTUS put California on notice that its schools cannot keep parents in the dark.
We’ll announce next steps after we review the court’s written ruling. One thing is clear: It’s only a matter of time until a court rules that parents must be told when their children socially transition at school, whether they ask for that information or not. californiapolicycenter.org/f…

Parents, teachers & school board members, I'm pleading with you to read two things:
1. California Education Code 51100-51101
2. The SCOTUS decision in Mirabelli from 6 months ago
Then ask yourself these questions:
Why should parents have to bend over backwards to ask simple questions that they didn't have to ask 15 minutes ago?
What are schools really hiding?
And if you can't trust your local school to be on the level with you, why should people send the most precious things in the world to them?
Links are in the replies.

One thing that really shocked me when reporting this story is that LAUSD enrollment is down almost 50% from its 2002 peak. And let's not forget that they added a new grade during this period (Transitional Kindergarten). ocregister.com/2026/07/22/lo…

LAUSD should not be struggling given its declining enrollment & greater state funding, says @marcjoffe. Yet the board approved a budget that spends more than the district takes in and ratified new labor agreements whose costs the county specifically cited as a driver of the coming insolvency.

Consistent Local Planning for Individualized Learning Shouldn’t Be Controversial
"Microschools are an answer to that problem. They are, in Lizette’s definition, “intentionally small, innovative, and personalized learning environments rooted in human-centered design.” They operate under California’s existing Private School Affidavit process, already fully legal under state law. And they deliver on something the research consistently supports: that children learn better when they are genuinely known by the adults teaching them," writes @lancelands.

SCOTUS has ruled that parents hold ultimate authority over what their children are taught in school—especially on sensitive topics. @theJusticeDept will not tolerate schools ignoring the law. The @CivilRights Division is committed to protecting parents’ rights under FERPA.

June 14 is the anniversary of the 1846 Bear Flag Revolt. But how many California students could explain the Bear Flag Republic or how California became a state? We have no idea because California eliminated statewide testing in history and social studies. ow.ly/y6wa50ZbyHr

My colleague, @AndrewDav18, recently put together a banger report on the history & importance of charter schools in California & teachers unions' opposition to these kinds of options for parents.
It's worth considering.
