“My father was the rock of our family, and we all looked up to him.” When Nadine A.’s father, Eddie, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at just 46, her family knew very little about the disease. They found PanCAN while searching for information and support — and Nadine’s connection to the organization has continued ever since, even after her father’s passing. In 2003, she began volunteering in the Miami area, helping connect her community with information and resources about pancreatic cancer. She later stepped away while raising her children, then returned as a #PanCANvolunteer leader about four years ago. Today, she serves as chair of the PanCAN Miami Affiliate. One memory from those early days has stayed with her. When PanCAN sent her a box filled with educational materials and purple items to share in her community, she showed it to her father. “He said, ‘Wow, that’s hope in a box.’” For Nadine, volunteering has become a way to honor her father, give back to her community and show her children the value of helping others. “I feel like I’ve gained more from volunteering than I’ve put in.” Her whole family has been part of the journey — from helping at events when her children were young to having extended family members contribute their time and support. “It’s a very good feeling to work together for a cause that’s so important to us.” Read Nadine’s story and learn more about the impact of volunteering with PanCAN at 🔗 pcan.at/m9mjd5uq.

Seventeen years ago today, the world lost the extraordinary actor, dancer and singer-songwriter Patrick Swayze to pancreatic cancer. He was 57. His legacy lives on through the love and advocacy of his wife, PanCAN Ambassador Lisa Niemi Swayze, who shares: "When Patrick was diagnosed, the statistics were grim. Median survival: three to six months. Five-year survival: nine percent. Startling information, huh? It was beyond depressing. But every ounce of energy we had was gonna go into helping him live. When he first found out he had pancreatic cancer, he turned to me and said, ‘I’m a dead man.’ But soon after, on a walk at our New Mexico ranch, he held my hand and said, ‘I want to live.’ That’s who Patrick was. I made a decision that I was going to be who he needed me to be. I could cry, I could fall apart, I could panic — later. But not now. Cancer doesn’t happen to just one person. It sets out to kill those who love that person a little bit, too. Patrick really was a hero. You give him a sword, a cape and a horse, and he’s a happy man — and when it came to fighting his illness, you really saw his courage. While pancreatic cancer may have taken him in the end, it never beat him. Just because he’s gone doesn’t mean this fight is over. I will continue it for him." Last week, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted approval for a new drug targeting the mutations that drive more than 90% of pancreatic cancer cases — a sweeping advance for a disease that has few treatment options and a five-year survival rate of just 13%.
