An Older Alberta Independence Supporter Gives a Young Canadian a History Lesson!
At the Alberta Legislature, a young counter-protester argued that Canada could still be fixed. Then an older independence supporter joined our conversation.
When the young man blamed older generations for Canada's problems, the gentleman challenged him on his ageism and walked him through more than a century of Western Canadian history.
From the creation of Alberta in 1905 to Louis Riel, Preston Manning's Reform Party, and decades of unsuccessful attempts at constitutional reform, he made a compelling case for why so many Albertans have lost faith in Ottawa.
The young man pushed back, but he also listened.
Two generations, two very different perspectives, and a fascinating debate about Alberta's future.

Wings up, like a bird's, and a carrier can suddenly hold far more aircraft.
Folding wings were how fighters squeezed onto crowded decks and into hangars.
Grumman's Hellcat and Avenger used the Sto Wing, which twisted each wing as it swung back so it sat flush against the fuselage.
Leroy Grumman reportedly worked out the angle with an eraser and paper clips.
To my eye, the Sto Wing was among the cleverest bits of engineering in the whole war.
