Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif's Message on Breast Cancer Awareness Day,19 October 2026.
Today,on breast cancer awareness Day, Pakistan joins the international community in raising a strong and collective voice to address the serious health challenges facing women, particularly breast cancer.
Breast cancer awareness, early detection, timely treatment and continued care are matters of profound concern for every nation that values the health and lives of its daughters, mothers and sisters.
As part of our concerted efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer, a comprehensive strategy has been developed to promote early detection, ensure timely medical examinations, facilitate access to quality treatment and provide continuity of care across the country.
In collaboration with provincial governments and relevant institutions at the local level, the Federal Government is striving to ensure the availability of essential healthcare services, including specialised cancer treatment facilities, throughout the country.
Public awareness, a supportive environment and ease of access to healthcare are crucial to ensuring that women receive the medical attention they need without delay. Women living in rural and underprivileged areas, where access to healthcare facilities is often limited, deserve particular attention. The Government is firmly committed to ensuring that no Pakistani woman is deprived of timely and quality treatment because of her geographical location or financial circumstances.
The tireless efforts and dedicated services of Lady Health Workers in remote areas are instrumental in extending healthcare services to women. Their invaluable contributions deserve our deepest appreciation and recognition.
As part of our breast cancer awareness initiatives, particular emphasis has been placed on training Lady Health Workers to educate women about breast self-examination, the recognition of symptoms, the importance of seeking timely medical advice and the need to consult appropriate healthcare facilities without delay.
Healthcare personnel at urban and rural primary healthcare centres are receiving specialised training to strengthen their capacity for the early detection of breast cancer.
The Federal Breast Cancer Screening Centre established at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) is providing free screening, diagnostic services and medicines, while ensuring the timely referral of suspected cases for further medical evaluation and treatment.
The Govt is also taking steps, through public health and social protection programmes and in collaboration with private organisations, to expand access to breast cancer screening.Efforts are under way to strengthen coordination and cooperation among healthcare institutions and relevant stakeholders.
A supportive environment, a compassionate approach, and due consideration of patients’ needs must remain central to our collective response to this disease.
My message to every daughter of Pakistan is 'your health is a priority for the entire nation'. If you have any concerns about your health, please seek medical advice without delay.Healthy mothers are the foundation of healthy families and a brighter future for our nation.
I urge families, communities, the media, religious leaders, educational institutions, civil society and medical professionals to play their part in breaking the silence and overcoming the hesitation and stigma associated with breast cancer, and to encourage women to seek timely medical examinations and treatment.
Let us ensure that the message of awareness reaches every household and that women are equipped with the knowledge, confidence and courage to seek medical assistance without fear, hesitation or apprehension about social attitudes. My Govt reaffirms its commitment to the daughters of Pakistan that we will continue to take every possible measure to protect their health and improve their access to timely, affordable and quality healthcare.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif's Message on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, 17 October 2026.
On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, Pakistan reaffirms its commitment to taking concerted, effective and practical measures, at both national and global levels, to eradicate poverty, reduce inequality and ensure equitable opportunities for development.
Protecting the social and economic rights of every citizen, safeguarding their dignity and honour, and ensuring equal opportunities for economic well-being are fundamental human rights. The eradication of poverty is also essential to overcoming social divisions and addressing the other social ills.
At the global level, this day is being observed under the United Nations’ three year campaign for 2026-2028, themed “United for Peace and Human Rights,” with the 2026 sub-theme of “A Safe Home for All.”
These themes underscore the importance of collective and united efforts to eradicate poverty and build a peaceful and just society. Economic prosperity, adequate food supplies and safe housing are among the essential outcomes of poverty alleviation. Safe and dignified housing, in particular, is fundamental to the well-being of citizens.
The Government is facilitating access to affordable housing for citizens, particularly economically vulnerable segments of society, through easy financing under the Prime Minister’s Apna Ghar Scheme. In addition to financial constraints, the impacts of climate change, including floods and heavy rainfall, also contribute to housing shortages. Through this scheme, access to financial assistance for the construction and purchase of affordable homes is being expanded.
Promoting the social and economic well-being of the people is a constitutional responsibility of the Government. The Constitution of Pakistan reflects our national commitment to establishing a welfare state. In fulfilment of this constitutional obligation, the Government is pursuing an integrated strategy that links social protection with human development, skills enhancement, livelihood opportunities, employment and economic empowerment.
To provide direct financial assistance, the Government continues to strengthen and sustain the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), as a key social welfare initiative. The launch of the National Socio Economic Registry and the Digital Social Protection Wallet aims to protect beneficiaries from exploitation and ensure transparency in the delivery of financial assistance. Digital distribution mechanisms have further strengthened the effective identification of deserving beneficiaries, transparency in disbursements and financial inclusion.
To help citizens to establish sustainable livelihoods, the Government is taking practical steps to ensure equal access to education and provide technical and vocational training. Through the Daanish Schools System, talented children across the country are being provided with quality educational opportunities and comprehensive care, irrespective of their socioeconomic backgrounds, thereby bridging class divides.
The National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) has been further strengthened to equip young people nationwide with internationally aligned technical competencies and marketable skills. Decent employment, entrepreneurship and economic opportunities for young people are the true guarantors of poverty eradication.
Through initiatives such as the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme, “Uraan Pakistan,” Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal and the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), among others, the Government is working to reduce poverty by improving livelihoods and strengthening infrastructure. These efforts will also help address deprivations in housing, energy, healthcare and education, enabling vulnerable and deserving families to strengthen their livelihoods and move towards economic self-reliance.

President calls for greater opportunities for legal migration for Pakistani workers and professionals in Europe
President Asif Ali Zardari has called for greater opportunities for legal migration for Pakistani workers and professionals in Europe, stressing that Pakistan’s sustained efforts to curb irregular migration should be matched by expanded legal pathways, skills-based mobility and structured cooperation with the European Union.
The President expressed these views during a meeting with Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, who called on him at Aiwan-e-Sadr today. The meeting focused on Pakistan-EU relations, cooperation on migration management, efforts to combat human trafficking and migrant smuggling, and opportunities to facilitate legal migration.
President Asif Ali Zardari said Pakistan attaches great importance to its broad-based cooperation with the European Union and remains committed to implementing the Pakistan-EU Strategic Engagement Plan.
The President highlighted Pakistan’s cooperation with the EU in curbing irregular migration, noting that Pakistan continues to implement the EU Readmission Agreement and has readmitted more than 30,000 individuals over the years. He said Pakistan remains committed to combating human trafficking and irregular migration through stronger legislation, institutional capacity, border controls and international cooperation.
Referring to the progress made in reducing irregular migration, the President noted that, according to EU figures, irregular migration from Pakistan reduced by 64% in the last eighteen months, making Pakistan the only country in the region to achieve such a reduction. He said this progress reflects Pakistan’s sustained efforts and underlined the importance of expanding safe and legal avenues for migration.
The meeting was informed that Pakistan has sought the European Union’s assistance in strengthening the capacity of the Pakistan Coast Guards and the Federal Investigation Agency to enhance efforts to combat irregular migration and migrant smuggling.
The President emphasised that legal migration pathways are essential to providing safe opportunities for workers and reducing reliance on smuggling networks. He highlighted the Pakistan-EU Migration and Mobility Dialogue as a useful framework for matching Pakistan’s human-resource potential with European labour-market needs and expressed the hope that the next round of dialogue, expected to take place in Brussels early next year, would advance this cooperation.

President Asif Ali Zardari has called for stronger Pakistan-Russia cooperation in trade, energy, industrial development, regional connectivity and counterterrorism, stressing the need to translate the goodwill between the two countries’ leaderships into tangible outcomes for their peoples.
The President expressed these views while talking to Vladimir Kolokoltsev, Minister of the Interior of the Russian Federation, who called on him at Aiwan-e-Sadr today.
Welcoming the Russian Interior Minister to Pakistan, the President said bilateral relations continue to grow independently of geopolitical considerations and relations with third countries. He emphasised the importance of making full use of existing institutional mechanisms to advance cooperation across various sectors.
The President said bilateral trade, which stood at US$243.412 million in the financial year 2025, remains below its potential.
The President described Russia as an important energy partner and expressed Pakistan’s interest in expanding cooperation in the oil and gas sectors.
Emphasising the importance of regional connectivity, President Zardari said Pakistan’s geographical position makes it a natural bridge between South, Central and West Asia. He expressed interest in strengthening connectivity through the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), as well as rail and road links through Central Asia. He also stressed the need for the early resumption of direct flights and improved cargo connectivity between Pakistan and Russia.
On people-to-people and educational ties, the President appreciated the manifold increase in visas issued by Pakistan to Russian nationals and called for reciprocal visa facilitation for Pakistani businessmen, tourists and students as well. He also expressed satisfaction over the growing number of Pakistani students pursuing higher education in Russia and highlighted the need to address their visa, residency and immigration-related difficulties.
Discussing regional security, President Zardari expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in the Gulf, particularly attacks on maritime traffic, energy installations and critical infrastructure. He said the conflict posed serious challenges to regional stability, global energy security, trade and supply chains. He stressed respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, urged the parties to exercise restraint and honour their commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, and called for resolving differences through dialogue and diplomacy. He also emphasised the importance of safe maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev said that Pakistan and Russia enjoy strong bilateral relations that continue to improve with time. He expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its support at various multilateral forums, particularly the United Nations. He observed that bilateral trade was not commensurate with the strength of bilateral relations and said there is considerable potential to expand trade between the two countries.
