The #NobelPrize in Chemistry 2026 recognises discoveries that have enabled chemists to drive chemical reactions that lead to homochirality. Life’s chemistry is what chemists call homochiral, after the Greek words for “same” and “hand”. Like hands, all amino acids exist as two mirrored variants, but only one of them is found in the proteins in your cells. The other is rarely found in nature. For a long time, chemists wondered how homochirality can emerge. When they began to experiment with chemical reactions that can form two mirrored molecules, they always obtained equal proportions of both in their test tubes. However, chemists strived to produce only one of these mirror images, because in the development of molecules that will interact with living beings – such as in pharmaceuticals – only one mirror image will have the desired effect. Thanks to laureates Henri Kagan and Kenso Soai, we now know how homochirality can emerge. Their discoveries have been decisive for chemists who design reactions for the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

To understand how the brain forms memories, feelings and behaviours has long been a dream for researchers. Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel have been awarded the 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries leading to optogenetics, which makes it possible to switch on, or off, the activity of individual nerve cells in a living brain. This method is now being used in laboratories around the world to reveal the brain’s mysteries.

Today everyone is talking about Recursive Self-Improvement (RSI). In 1987, when compute was 100,000,000 x more expensive, I published the 1st concrete RSI algorithms. Now compute is cheap, and RSI is driving the future of both software and physical AI. See: RSI since 1987 people.idsia.ch/~juergen/rec… (Technical Note IDSIA-9-26) Also covered: RSI with self-modifying policies since 1994, gradient descent-based RSI in neural networks since 1992, asymptotically optimal RSI for curriculum learning since 2002, mathematically optimal RSI through the self-referential Gödel Machine since 2003, RSI combined with artificial curiosity and intrinsic motivation since 1990/1997, recent work on RSI since 2020. Software-based RSI has become practical. Full RSI, however, will require not just self-improving software but self-improving hardware in the physical world. As of 2026, companies talking about RSI include Anthropic, OpenAI, Sakana AI, SpaceX, Ricursive, Recursive Superintelligence, Inherent …

Can you guess what this picture is? It's an image of vitamin C, taken with polarised light. Vitamin C led to both the 1937 medicine and chemistry prizes: to Albert von Szent-Györgyi who first isolated it, and Norman Haworth for determining its molecular structure.

We’re sharing a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, one of the deepest problems at the frontier of mathematics. The proof was produced by a group of agents, using an OpenAI next-generation model significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra. The problem concerns whether the description of smooth three-dimensional fluid motion modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations can break down. It has remained unresolved for roughly 90 years.

The Gaussian integral appears throughout probability and statistical physics. The Lorentzian describes resonance and spectral line shapes. The sinc integral is central to Fourier analysis and the mathematics of reconstructing signals from discrete samples.
