This is the co-leader of the Scottish Greens and a member of the Scottish Parliament. Watch this if you still have any doubts Holyrood should be closed down.
This is quite astute.
"A freedom you can vindicate after years of litigation is different from one you can confidently exercise tomorrow."
What has Britain lost when it comes to free speech?
During The Spectator's Free Speech debate, women's rights campaigner Kellie-Jay Keen argues that the real test for free speech is not whether outspoken people eventually win in court, but whether ordinary people can afford to speak out in the first place.

Mothin Ali – apology and Correction
On 18 July 2024, I published a post on my X account in which I stated that Mr Mothin Ali, an elected official and Deputy Leader of the Green Party, was involved in the Harehills riots of July 2024 in which people attacked the police.
That statement was incorrect. In fact, Mr Ali was asked by the police to use his position of trust in the community to help bring about peace on the streets. Mr Ali attended the scene for that purpose alone. He was not involved in the disorder or violence in any way, and on the contrary he was one of the principal reasons of bringing an end to the disorder. I offer my sincere apologies to Mr Ali for my post, the harm I caused, and I have agreed to pay him compensation to vindicate his reputation.

🚨Councillor Michael Fife Cook, the leader of the Reform UK group on Devon County Council, raised safeguarding concerns after a large prosthetic penis and literature promoting “chemsex” were displayed at an LGBTQIA+ event in Exeter Library, next to a children’s art and colouring area.
The council then punished him for speaking out. Now, with the Free Speech Union’s backing, he is fighting back.
The event took place on 19th October 2025 as part of Exeter’s Out There Queer Fest. One mother complained that she had been forced to explain to her six- and seven-year-old children what the prosthetic penis was doing there.
A subsequent evidential review identified significant failings in relation to the event.
On 28th November, Cllr Fife Cook emailed fellow councillors and council officers to express his concerns about the safeguarding of children.
He wrote: “I think this makes it clear our council officers can’t be trusted in safeguarding children.”
He also warned that the incident made councillors “complicit in promoting and encouraging sexualisation of children”.
Rather than addressing his concerns, two senior council officers lodged complaints against him under the Council’s Code of Conduct.
On 29th July 2026, Devon County Council’s Standards Committee found that he had breached the Code, including by bringing himself or his office “into disrepute”, despite the independent investigator not having identified that particular breach.
The Committee ordered him to apologise in writing to the officers he had criticised and undergo training with the Council’s Monitoring Officer.
He refused — and rightly so.
An elected councillor should be free to raise concerns about safeguarding, challenge council officers and hold public authorities to account without facing disciplinary action for expressing an unwelcome opinion.
With the backing of the Free Speech Union, Cllr Fife Cook is now challenging the Council’s decision.
On 30th September, his solicitors, Sharpe Pritchard, sent Devon County Council a pre-action letter setting out four grounds of challenge: irrationality, a breach of his Article 10 right to freedom of expression, a failure to give adequate reasons and apparent bias.
But Michael’s case is part of a much wider problem.
Across the country, councillors are facing Code of Conduct complaints for social media posts, criticism of council policies and robust challenges to public officials. Time and again, we hear the phrase “bringing the council into disrepute”.
The Free Speech Union has supported councillors including Steve Horner, Kelvin Wright, Dulcie Tudor and John Edwards, who have faced complaints arising from their political speech.
Even when these complaints are dismissed, the process itself can become the punishment: months of investigations, legal costs, reputational damage and the chilling effect on other elected representatives who may think twice before speaking out.
And the Government wants to give councils even greater powers to punish elected representatives.
Under its proposed reforms, councils would be able to suspend councillors for up to six months, withhold their allowances and bar them from council premises. Two maximum-length suspensions within five years could result in disqualification from office.
Imagine the consequences if these powers were used against councillors simply for expressing contentious political opinions or challenging the conduct of council officers.
The Free Speech Union is supporting Michael’s legal challenge because we believe Codes of Conduct must not be weaponised to silence legitimate political speech.
A victory could help protect councillors across England from similar disciplinary action.
But litigation is expensive, and Michael will not be the last councillor who needs our help.
Please donate to the FSU’s legal defence fund to help us fight Michael’s case and defend the right of elected councillors to speak freely on behalf of the people who elected them 👇

President Trump’s decision to lift sanctions on Russian fuel amidst Putin’s ongoing and brutal attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine makes no sense and is a betrayal of the legacy and leadership of the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
While Ukraine fights for its survival, Putin’s war machine continues to prosecute his terrorist war on civilian populations and innocent Ukrainians are dying every day.
Now, Instead of implementing the tough sanctions Lindsey Graham fought to his last breath to enact, President Trump has announced the United States is lifting sanctions on Russian energy, fueling the Putin’s war machine.
As I saw firsthand in Ukraine last month, Putin is losing this war. Ukraine has fought the Russian military to a standstill and reinvented warfare with drones taking the fight into the heart of Russia.
America should not be throwing a lifeline to Putin’s war machine. Now is the time to stand strong against Russian aggression as we did during the first Trump administration.
Putin doesn’t want peace. Putin wants Ukraine. I have no doubt that if Putin overruns Ukraine, it will only be a matter of time until Russia’s military crosses a border that our troops will have to deal with him.
America is the Leader of the Free World. For our National Security, for the security of our Allies in Europe including Ukraine, President Trump should rescind this deal immediately and return to the strong policies of our four years in the White House; impose harsh sanctions on any nation purchasing Russian energy and work with our allies to ensure Ukraine has the military support it needs to repel and defeat this Russian invasion once and for all. This is economic illiteracy of a high order.
After separation Scotland would still use sterling. So it would have to borrow in £s to cover its massive budget deficit and promise lenders it would pay back in £s (or they won’t lend).
But after an unspecified transition it would move to a Scottish currency. But all the borrowing done during the transition would have to be paid back in sterling.
If the Scottish currency plummeted v sterling (likely given the size of the deficit, lack of credit track record etc) that could become an unmanageable burden given the likely poor exchange rate.
Scotland would have to borrow billions in its own currency just to convert to sterling to pay back lenders. Devaluing the Scottish currency further.
What a shambles that would be.
He has no idea what he’s talking about.

Piddington is not an immigration issue, it's a women's issue.
Everyone should feel safe in their home. But the women I spoke to in Piddington are terrified, and the Government isn't listening.
Enough is enough. We need to leave the ECHR, deport all illegal arrivals and protect communities like Piddington.
